OBJECTIVES = To organize and present the annual Reference Research Forum, to compile the annual Reference Research Review, to explore ways to do more with the "Statistics" portion of our charge.
SUMMARY = (summarize discussions, decision reached, follow-up action decided)
1. Welcome and introductions.
Introductions took place and the agenda was reviewed and approved. Minutes from ALA Midwinter 2004 were approved unanimously.
2. Reference Research Review.
. Discussed using legal size paper and whether there is a need for subject categories for the entries or whether we should use a bibliographic essay. Agreed that there is no limit on the number of entries and this year's list proved to be effectively printed on a two-sided standard sized paper.
. Agreed that putting the title first instead of the author's name would be advantageous.
. Recommended that we distribute more directions to committee members prior to writing the annotations next year and provide examples.
. Agreed that we are more interested in the Research Review as a way to understand the research in the field, not as a top 10 or top 20 list.
. Distribution of the Research Review is at the Reference Research Forum. Suggested that the review be distributed at other meetings at the Annual conference.
3. Web Project.
. Discussed the web links project on statistics and assessment information found on the web. There were some dead links and questions about whether to investigate authors' credentials and whether we need to summarize the content of each web site.
. Agreed that an introduction for the list is important to clarify that our goal is to provide information for folks who need research guidance, whether as a practitioner or as a researcher. Maintenance of the site was a question raised and whether we want to include best practices.
. Organization of the links under the following headings will take place. Committee members volunteered to find sites in the following categories, write a brief description of the site and provide the author's credentials, if available.
a) Gathering and Evaluating Reference Interactions: JoAnn Jacoby
b) Doing Statistical Research: Janelle Hedstrom and John Spencer
c) Data Sources Sites: Rebecca Jackson and Mary Casserly
d) Doing Qualitative Research: Steve Hiller and Joan Stein
e) Project Assessment and Evaluation: Melissa Gross and Carolyn Radcliff
. Suggestion that perhaps it would be useful to talk with the Evaluation of Reference and User Services Committee as we proceed with this project.
EVALUATION = The committee accomplished its first two objectives and made excellent progress with compiling appropriate statistics/evaluation websites to be added to our committee web site.
PROBLEMS = None, really.
