RSS/Marketing and Public Relations for Reference Services Committee
RSS All Committee Meeting
Saturday, June 23, 2007
Christy Donaldson (Chair)
Ann Brown (Minutes/In-coming Chair)
The committee decided to create a Discussion Forum for ALA Midwinter 2008, Philadelphia, with the topic of "As the definition of Reference changes—how do we market it?"
The outcome will be to come up with tips for marketing reference in this changing arena. And to inform the committee's future programming.
We also coordinated with the RUSA/RSS Evaluation of Reference and User Services Committee, to use their draft of "Guidelines for Measuring and Assessing Reference Services and Resources". We also spoke with Dave Tyckoson to get his definition of Reference as well. We hope to use these varying definitions as a prompt for our discussions.
For basic set-up we want ten ten-person tables, hopefully with a facilitator from our committee at each table.
We will work online as a committee to distribute action items, such as pre-reading material, creation of handouts, and advertisements.
"Future Friends: Marketing Reference and User Services to Generation X"
Sunday, June 24, 2007
Co-Sponsored by RSS/Services to Adults and RSS/Marketing and Public Relations for Reference Services
Elisabeth Leonard began the talk with a quick run through of basic demographics and generalizations of Generation X.
Three librarians from the St. Charles (IL) Public Library spoke about their 20s & 30s program, T'N'T.
Our last speaker was from the Kansas City Public Library Young Friends Group, Book Ends. She spoke of their enormous success in creating local partnerships with other Young Friends Groups in Kansas City.
The Program was a solid success, with 300 attendees. We were also encouraged to submit this to PLA as a program.
The presentations will be going up on the website.
