Purpose of the RUSA Committee
The Standards and Guidelines Committee is responsible for advising the RUSA Board of Directors on standards and guidelines for the delivery of reference information services and materials to adults.

Meeting Time of RUSA Committee
Meeting time varies.

Term of Office
Two years

BRASS Duties

  • To convey BRASS concerns to the RUSA committee.
  • To serve as liaison between BRASS and the RUSA committee for section issues.
  • To solicit Executive Committee input on items of concern to the section.
  • To attend or report to the BRASS Executive Committee meeting on the RUSA Committee's activities and accomplishments.
  • To serve as a resource person to the BRASS Executive Committee and the section's committees on the development of standards and guidelines and to insure that appropriate approval channels are followed.

RUSA Committee Duties

  • Develop and maintain a RUSA policy statement and procedure manual for the preparation of all guidelines and standards issued by RUSA in order to insure coordination of format and correlation of content of RUSA guidelines and standards. The manual would be based on the ALA Standards Manual.
  • Assemble data and information as needed in the formulation of guidelines and standards. This would include ensuring that drafts of guidelines and standards are published for review in RUSA publications and holding hearings when appropriate.
  • Determine the need for new guidelines and standards and either formulate and issue such guidelines and standards or recommend their formulation by other appropriate units of RUSA or ALA.
  • Review prepared guidelines and standards for consistency with RUSA policy and ALA policy. The Standards and Guidelines Committee would also review guidelines and standards contents for conflict and/or duplication of efforts with statements of other ALA units.
  • Review existing guidelines and standards on a periodic basis for continued relevance and currency.
  • Monitor, examine and advise the RUSA Board of Directors on any ALA standards or guidelines related to the delivery of reference information services and of general library services and materials to adults.
  • As requested by RUSA or other ALA units, examine and comment on new or revised standards promulgated by ALA affiliated organizations, e.g. National Information Standards Organization (NISO).
