This book focuses on avoiding disaster during the most critical part of the job interview, the first five minutes.

Beatty, Richard H. The Perfect Cover Letter . 2d ed. New York: Wiley, 1997.
This is the revised and expanded edition of an indispensable guide to the elements of a good cover letter. Beatty is the author of several best selling career books including 175 High-Impact Cover Letters, 175 High-Impact Resumes, and The Resume Kit.

Besson, Taunee. Cover Letters . 2d ed. New York: Wiley, 1996.
This title, part of The National Business Employment Weekly Premier Guides series, offers practical advice on writing and customizing cover letters, sending cover letters through E-Mail, and using the Internet in the job search process. Other titles in this series include Interviewing and Resumes.

Block, Jay A., and Michael Betrus. 101 More Best Resumes . New York: McGraw-Hill, 1999.
This sequel to 101 Best Resumes is endorsed by the Professional Association of Resume Writers. These resumes (which cover jobs at all levels) are written by certified members of the Association. 101 More Best Resumes includes a section on electronic resumes.

Bolles, Richard Nelson. What Color is Your Parachute?: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters & Career Changers . 1999 ed. Berkeley: Ten Speed Press, 1999.

Put this one on reserve. Shows readers how to create graphically interesting resumes that stand out, but remain tasteful. The Edge literally has designer and special treatment papers tipped into its superbinding.

The Damn Good Resume: Home Page for Damn Good Resume Books and Author Yana Parker (
Parker's home page provides good tips on resume writing. Parker is a prolific author. Her best sellers (all published by Ten Speed Press) include The Damn Good Resume Guide: A Crash Course in Resume Writing, The Resume Catalog: 200 Damn Good Examples, Ready-to-Go Resumes, and Blue Collar & Beyond: Resumes for Skilled Trades & Services.

Drake, John D. The Perfect Interview: How to Get the Job You Really Want . 2d ed. New York: AMACOM, 1997.
Drake has had more than two decades of experience interviewing and counseling applicants for positions ranging from corporate trainee to CEO. He provides advice for novice and seasoned job hunters on making the best possible impression during an interview, on handling tough questions, and on negotiating compensation.

Fein, Richard. Cover Letters! Cover Letters! Cover Letters! 2d ed. Franklin Lakes, NJ: Career Press, 1997.
This updated and expanded version of a best seller provides detailed advice on writing a good cover letter and includes samples of not only cover letters but other job related letters. These include letters following up on an interview, letters thanking those who helped you in the job search process, and even letters rejecting a job offer. This helpful guide has been designed for a wide range of job seekers, including recent college graduates, experienced managers, and career changers.

Fry, Ronald W. 101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions . Career Press, 1994.
A great review for the interviewing-reluctant client. Offers recommendations for handling tough and illegal questions.

Getting Assistance with Cover Letters, Resumes, and Interview Skills (
This section of Penn State University's Career Services' Home Page helps users prepare cover letters and resumes. There is extensive advice on preparing for an interview, best approaches to answering interview questions, and tips for successful interviewing. This Web resource even covers planning for onsite interviews.

Haft, Tim. Job Notes: Resumes . New York: Random House, 1997.
This Princeton Review series title is designed for novice job hunters. In less than 90 pages, Haft teaches users how to craft an effective resume. Sample resumes are provided. Other titles in this series include: Job Notes: Interviews, Job Notes: Cover Letters, and Job Notes: Networking.

Jobstar! California Job Search Guide (
This well designed site provides advice on drafting resumes and cover letters, provides samples of each, lists places on the Web where individuals can post their resume, and provides links to Web resources on resumes and cover letters. This Website was previously called JobSmart.

Kanter, Arnold B. The Essential Book of Interviewing: Everything You Need to Know From Both Sides of the Table. New York: Times Books, 1995.
Kanter gives detailed advice to both interviewers and interviewees. He discusses the expectations of both parties and helps both interviewees and interviewers prepare for the interview.

King, Julia Adair. The Smart Woman's Guide to Interviewing and Salary Negotiation. 2d ed. Franklin Lakes, NJ: Career Press, 1995.
Although this book focuses on helping women in the interviewing and salary negotiation process, much of the advice is gender neutral. Other titles in The Smart Woman's series include The Smart Woman's Guide to Resumes and Job Hunting and The Smart Woman's Guide to Networking.

Krannich, Ron, and Caryl Krannich. Dynamite Cover Letters and Other Great Job Search Letters. 4th ed. Manassas Park, VA: Impact Publications, 1999.
The authors provide commonsense advice on writing cover letters and other job related letters. There are more than 50 examples of effective cover letters, approach letters (defined as letters used to approach individuals for information, advice, and referral), thank you letters, rejection letters, and letters of withdrawal and acceptance. The Krannich's have also co-authored 201 Dynamite Job Search Letters, Dynamite Resumes, and 101 Dynamite Answers to Interview Questions.

An excellent primer for mid to upper level management person in search of a new position and advancement. Covers the whole enchilada--job hunting, cover letters, resumes, interviewing, working with headhunters, handling the offer and negotiation.

Martin, Eric R., and Karyn E. Langhorne. How to Write Successful Cover Letters. Lincolnwood, IL: VGM Career Horizons, 1994.
This is a step by step guide to writing successful cover letters that will make you stand out in a crowd. Exercises help users master the process. The appendix includes sample cover letters. Martin and Langhorne are also the co-authors of Cover Letters They Don't Forget, a practical manual published by VGM Career Horizons in 1993.

Medley, H. Anthony. Sweaty Palms: The Neglected Art of Being Interviewed. Rev. ed. Berkeley, CA: Ten Speed Press, 1993.
This classic on interviewing was first published in 1978. Many career experts regard it as the best book on interviewing. Medley provides advice on preparing for an interview, gives tips on dressing and making small talk, and provides good advice on handling tough questions (including those that are questionable), and addresses what to do after receiving a job offer.

Nemnich, Mary B., and Fred E. Jandt. Cyberspace Resume Kit: How to Make and Launch A Snazzy Online Resource. Indianapolis: JIST Works, 1999.
The authors provide easy to understand instructions on creating and distributing electronic resumes. They provide a list of some of the best sites for posting resumes.

101 Great Resumes. Franklin Lakes, NJ.: Career Press, 1996.
Along with providing practical advice on creating a resume, the editors of Career Press have assembled 101 effective resumes for professions ranging from accounting to cosmetology. There are also examples of unique resumes, such as resumes for older adults returning to the workplace from retirement.

Podesta, Sandra, and Andrea Paxton. 201 Killer Cover Letters. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1996.
This is a compendium of sample cover letters for specific jobs ranging from art director in an advertising agency to a x-ray technician in a health care facility. There is an index of letters by industry and job title.

Potter, Ray. 101 Best Resumes for Today's Hottest Jobs. New York: Macmillan, 1998.
Potter, a career counselor, provides advice on the best career prospects for the 21st century as well as tips on electronic resumes and online job hunting. Potter is also the author of Electronic Resumes That Get Jobs.

Preparing a Resume (
This guide to resume writing, prepared by the Writing Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is particularly useful for those preparing a resume for the first time.

Rebecca Smith's eResumes & Resources (
Rebecca Smith, the creator of this Web site, is also the author of Electronic Resumes and Online Networking (Career Press, 1999). In fact, the book grew out of this award winning Website which has been online since 1995. This Website leads users through the process of customizing and distributing an electronic resume.

Ryan, a leading authority on job search and hiring, explains the importance of cover letters and discusses cover letter mistakes in detail. She provides multiple examples of winning cover letters.

The books in this series provide practical advice on writing resumes for specific professions. Each title includes sample cover letters and resumes. Weddle, Peter D. Internet Resumes: Take the Net to Your Next Job! Manassas Park: Impact Publications, 1998.
This is a step by step guide to writing and distributing electronic resumes. Weddle includes examples of electronic resumes (both well and poorly designed) in order to illustrate his principles for online resumes. He also includes a list of sites that accept resumes for posting.

Whitcomb, Susan Britten. Résumé Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer. Indianapolis: JIST Works, 1999.
Whitcomb, a professional resume writer, provides a meticulous step by step account of the process it takes to create a resume that stands out. Résumé Magic, which is approximately 600 pages long, provides depth not found in most resume guidebooks.

Yate, Martin, John. Resumes That Knock 'Em Dead. 3rd ed. Holbrook, MA: Adams Media Corporation, 1998.
More than 3 million copies of this best selling resume guide have been sold. Yate provides sound advice on creating and distributing resumes (including electronic resumes) and provides numerous examples of well designed resumes for a wide range of job hunters.
