The Social Responsibilities Round Table is pleased to announce the first annual Herb Biblo Conference Travel Grants that will help finance attendance at the ALA Annual Conference. The $1000 award covers limited fees related to airfare, lodging, and conference registration. The grants will launch in 2019 and will continue for a three-year pilot. Up to two grants will be given each year.
Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) members and leaders play a critical role in the efficacy of the round table - the ability to successfully carry out the mission of the task forces, to engage new members, and to run the meetings at ALA Annual and Midwinter Meetings. The Herb Biblo Conference Travel Grants sponsored by the Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) will help finance attendance at the ALA Annual Conference. The $1000 award covers limited fees related to airfare, lodging, and conference registration. SRRT will fund up to two applicants per year.
About Herb Biblo
Nobody had a stronger sense of justice than Herb Biblo. He was a stalwart member of SRRT beginning soon after its formation, and he played a strong role in influencing SRRT policies and activities. Herb brought his activism to the ALA Council, serving as a councilor for 24 years, beginning in 1977 with some gaps until 2002, including as ALA Treasurer from 1980 to 1984. He was also very active in his local library association, the Nassau County Library Association, and in the New York Library Association, winning distinguished awards in both organizations. Herb touched the lives of many through his encouragement and mentoring. In a sense, this award carries on his work by giving a chance to new librarians to participate in SRRT activities.
The SRRT Conference Travel Grants Ad Hoc Selection Committee will consider the following in its deliberations:
- The applicant's conference interests and goals regarding ALA and SRRT
- The applicant's potential contributions to ALA and SRRT
- How the applicant intends to use the ALA conference experience in their career, at their home institution, and/or in local, state and regional associations
Applicants must be personal ALA/SRRT members.
The deadline to apply is December 15 of each year. All applicants will be notified of the Ad Hoc Selection Committee's decision by January 15. Recipients will receive half of the award prior to conference, and the remaining half after conference. Submissions for 2019 are now closed; please check back in the fall of 2019 for 2020 grants.
