IFRT Committees

Volunteer for the Intellectual Freedom Round Table

Bylaws Committee - The Bylaws and Organization Committee reviews the bylaws and guidelines of round table committees, and recommends changes as needed from time to time.

Coalition Building Committee - Charged with administering the Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award, this committee recognizes that effective coalition building in units provides the necessary framework to defend censorship at the ground level

Executive Board - The officers of the round table and the chairs of the Bylaws and Organization, Membership Promotion, Nominating, and Program Committees shall constitute the Executive Committee. Chairs of other standing committees and liaisons shall be non-voting members of the Executive Committee.

Immroth Award Committee - The John Phillip Immroth Award Committee serves as the award jury to select and honor notable contributions to intellectual freedom and demonstrations of personal courage in defense of freedom of expression.  

Membership Promotion Committee - The mission of the Membership Promotion Committee is to develop and undertake effective ways to attract new members to IFRT, as well as to retain current members. The Membership Committee works with IFRT's Board and other IFRT committees to communicate the value of belonging to IFRT.

Merritt Fund Committee - The LeRoy C. Merritt Humanitarian Fund provides financial support to librarians who are denied employment rights because of their defense of intellectual freedom and privacy, or as a result of discrimination. Members of this committee raise awareness of the Merritt fund.

Nominating Committee - The Nominating Committee, chaired by the immediate past chair of the Round Table, shall seek candidates for the Round Table’s elected offices and prepares a slate of candidates for each midwinter meeting. 

Oboler Award Committee - The Eli M. Oboler Memorial Award, which consists of $500 and a certificate, is presented biannually (next in 2020) for the best published work in the area of intellectual freedom. Members of the Oboler Award Committee review the books and journal articles submitted for consideration and determine which piece of writing to honor. 

Program Committee - This committee will plan the 2019 IFRT annual conference program. This conference will be in Washington D.C.

Publications & Communications Committee - The publications & communications committee promotes the activities of the IFRT. This includes creating and maintaining a web site of information, producing reports on the activities of the IFRT, and promoting IFRT through social media channels.


Education Advisory Special Committee - This committee is charged with working on continuing education opportunities for IFRT members, including advising OIF on webinar topics, identifying speakers in the IF world, and proposing education oriented activities to the IFRT Board. This group will make a recommendation at the end of the term regarding whether or not it should become a standing committee. John "Mack" Freeman, IFRT Chair 2018-2019

Strategic Planning Special Committee - This committee is charged with developing a strategic plan and direction for the IFRT and it’s activities that will cover the three years from July 2019-June 2022. The 2018-2019 IFRT Chair and Chair-Elect shall be members in addition to interested volunteers from the round table. John "Mack" Freeman; IFRT Chair 2018-2019
