Creating Dynamic Library Atmospheres
What We Can Learn from Theater, Retail, Museums, and the Container Store
A PLA "Public Libraries at Work" webinar
Once you've displayed books face out, and installed slatwall so you can display even more books face out, what's next? Is the soda machine really the first impression you want to make? See how a professional and some amateurs made some big differences—for very little money.
Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this one-hour webinar, participants will:
- Have learned a new way of looking at their libraries
- Have learned about "outside the box" sources for furnishings
- Leave with at least one idea they can implement immediately
Instructors
Sally Decker Smith began her library career in circulation, and originally planned to return to teaching when her younger daughter began school. Thirty library years and an MLS later, she is enjoying a fifth career as a public library consultant, with an emphasis on giving library staff members ways to do their jobs better, and more easily. She met Ted a long, long time ago when she was working her way through undergraduate school at the Museum of Science and Industry.
Ted Swigon studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and IIT (Illinois Institute of Technology) before spending 20 years in the at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, the last five as director of exhibits. He currently is a consultant in the area of museum design, and has also applied his visual skills to libraries all over the country.
