Federal Grant Supports Digital Preservation Programs at Libraries

(Washington, D.C.) - People and families in seven communities moved one step closer to being able to digitize and preserve video tapes, photographs and other family keepsakes at their library. Their libraries have been awarded a Memory Lab Network Grant.

CHICAGO – Twenty-seventeen was a busy year for DigitalLearn.org, the Public Library Association’s (PLA) website designed to help consumers increase their digital literacy skills. DigitalLearn.org offers a collection of tutorials on a wide range of subjects through video-based learning modules with narration at a fourth-grade reading level, the majority of which are available in both English and Spanish.

CHICAGO – This month, the Public Library Association (PLA) will host a webinar intended to help libraries plan for collaborative outcome measurement when working with partner organizations. This webinar, Working with Partners: How to Plan for Collaborative Outcome Measurement, will be held 1 – 2 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

CHICAGO -- The Public Library Association (PLA), a long-time supporter of the American Library Association's Emerging Leaders (EL) program, will sponsor the participation of two library professionals in the 2018 EL class. EL is a leadership development program which enables newer library workers from across the country to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA's structure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity.

CHICAGO -- The Public Library Association (PLA) and DC Public Library are seeking applications from public libraries interested in establishing robust digital preservation/archiving programs. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awarded DCPL, in partnership with PLA, a National Leadership Grant (LG-95-17-0079-17) to build Memory Lab digital preservation programs in select libraries across the U.S.

CHICAGO – In early December, PLA will host a webinar highlighting how select libraries are using Project Outcome to align performance measurement efforts with strategic priorities and measuring their success in priority program areas.

CHICAGO – Libraries are taking a proactive approach toward engaging parents and caregivers in supporting the early literacy development of their children, and the Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library® (ECRR) Program is an excellent tool to ensure libraries’ success. These were two of the key findings of a study released this month by Dr. Susan B. Neuman, a professor of childhood education and literacy development at New York University.
