Amita Lonial is just beginning a new role as the assistant library director at the Tacoma (WA) Public Library. She also had the privilege of working at San Diego County (CA) Library and Skokie (IL) Public Library, where her roles focused on public programming, marketing and learning. Prior to becoming a librarian, Lonial spent eight years in the non-profit sector organizing for racial and economic justice. She is deeply committed to how libraries can advance equity and social justice through their programs and services, and currently serve as the co-chair of the PLA Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
Outside of libraries Lonial's heart belongs to her partner of 12 years and their 4-year-old child. She is also deeply fond of karaoke, Legos, and craft cocktails.
“It would be an honor to serve on the PLA Board and support all the incredible initiatives underway. Issues I am passionate about include civic engagement, early childhood education and digital literacy. I’m also interested in seeing PLA expand leadership opportunities for people of color, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities.”
