Board Rotation and Expiration Schedule
The 2008 bylaws revision calls for a PLA Board of Directors consisting of: President, President-Elect, Past-President, 6 Director at-Large (2 elected each year with staggered terms), ALA Division Councilor, representative from ALTA who is a non-voting, PLA Executive Director. The bylaws revision provides for a transition in the size of the PLA Board of Directors. This transition will take place though the 2012 program year, which at that time will bring the total number on the PLA Board of Directors to twelve (12) members from twenty-four (24).
In 2011, PLA members also approved a request to keep the PLA bylaws current and accurate through the removal of references to ALTA (Association for Library Trustees and Advocates), a discontinued organization. In 2009, ALTA merged with FOLUSA (Friends of Libraries USA) to form ALTAFF (Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations). As a result ALTA no longer exists. Additionally, there was previously an ALTA representative on the PLA board and a PLA representative on the ALTA board. This cross-over representation is not supported by the ALTAFF structure, so the approved update to the bylaws reflects that.
Below is a year-by-year summary in the composition of the PLA Board of Directors through 2012.
2009
Had 17 Directors at-Large (2009, 2010, 2011), plus President, Past-President, President-Elect, ALA Division Councilor, ALTA representative, Executive Director. Total board members: 23 (Note one board member was unable to fulfill the new terms of service therefore we had 23 continuing board members rather than 24.)
2010
Had 12 Directors at-Large (2010, 2011), plus President, Past-President, President-Elect, ALA Division Councilor, ALTA representative, Executive Director. Total board members: 17
2011
Will have 6 Directors at-Large (2011) plus President, Past-President, President-Elect, ALA Division Councilor, Executive Director. Total board members: 11

- 2 Directors at-Large (2 year term 2012–2013)
- 2 Directors at-Large (3 year term 2013–2014)
