Equity, diversity and inclusion are critical and strategic values that librarians work to integrate into their collections and services. Touching on the many aspects of library collections, this discussion will address equitable access to collections, scholarly communication and diversity, diversity and visibility in collection development and management, and inclusion and advocacy in cataloging.

This is part 1 in the two-part series on Library of Congress Subject Headings. Topics covered in this introductory session will include the history and principles of the LCSH vocabulary, the basics of content analysis, how to assign main headings and to build structured headings with topical free-floating subdivisions, and tools, such as the Subject Headings Manual, that support these activities.
The role of technical services in the 21st century research library will be considered against a backdrop of current trends in universities, research, and scholarly communications. Many natural library responses, including the curation of the evolving scholarly record and the implementation of campus research information systems, all offer potential engagement for technical services librarians. These opportunities will be reviewed in order to chart a positive future for technical services specialists and the services they deliver.
