Resolution on the Fiftieth Anniversary of the United Nations
Whereas, The fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations will be October 24, 1995; and
Whereas, The United Nations is an organization dedicated to achieving world peace and security and to promoting humane and democratic values and the free flow of information; and
Whereas, The United Nations has played a significant role in the development and support of libraries throughout the world; and
Whereas, The United Nations' Dag Hammarskjold Library is an important resource for the work of the UN and for students and scholars working in the international arena; and
Whereas, The UN Secretary General and the General Assembly have called upon all people to observe the organization's fiftieth anniversary; and
Whereas, The United Nations Association of the United States and many other organizations are marking the fiftieth anniversary with programs and events; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the American Library Association extends its congratulations to the United Nations on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary; and, be it further
Resolved, That the American Library Association and its members participate in the year-long "opportunity to commemorate, educate and celebrate" the accomplishments of the United Nations; and, be it further
Resolved, That the American Library Association wishes the United Nations continued success and world leadership in addressing global security, environmental, educational, health, economic and human rights needs.
