Chapter experiences of the current CRC
The interests of Chapters are represented within ALA by the Chapter Relations Committee (CRC) and the Chapter Relations Office. Below are descriptions of the Chapter experiences of the current CRC.
Chair and Members
Annelle R. Huggins, chair
- I live in Memphis, TN and am an Associate Professor and Associate Dean of University Libraries at the University of Memphis. I have been at the University of Memphis for 29.5 years. Prior to that I held positions at the University of Oklahoma Libraries and Texas A&M University Libraries.
- My chapter is the Tennessee Library Association (TLA). In TLA I have served as President (1997/98); chair of several standing committees over the years; TLA ALA Chapter Councilor 2000 – 2006, and have been the Executive Director (the only paid staff) of TLA since December 2000 (it keeps me busy on nights and weekends!)
- In ALA I have served as a member of the Committee on Education 2003-2005; ALA Planning and Budget Assembly 2004-2006; Chapter Relations Committee 2007-2009. I am currently serving on ALA President Roberta Stevens’ Presidential Advisory Group and have just recently been appointed by her to Chair a Task Force on Chapter Relations (more about this will be posted to this listserv in the near future.)
David Dahl, member
- I live in Towson, MD and work at Towson University as an Emerging Technologies Librarian. I have been in this position for just over 2 years (my first position out of grad school). I serve as the chair of the web committee amongst other things here at Towson.
- I am a member of the Maryland Library Association (MLA) and am in my 2nd year as Secretary of ACRL MD, the academic division of MLA. I was recently named MLA’s 2010 Emerging Leader.
- In addition to the Chapter Relations Committee, I have also just begun a 3-year stint with the Communications Committee for ACRL’s University Libraries Section. I have been an active member of ALA and ACRL for 5 consecutive years. In 2009, I participated in ALA’s Emerging Leaders program.
Joe Dahlstrom, member
- Director of Libraries for University of Houston-Victoria AND Victoria College in Victoria, Texas (for 22 years). Previously I was library director at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas.
- I have served as president of the Texas Library Association (1987-88), chair of TLA’s College & University Library Division (which also is the Texas chapter of ACRL), chair of several committees at various times (Legislative Committee, Bylaws Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and, most recently, a Task Force on Unit Bylaws).
- In ALA, this is my second tour of duty on Chapter Relations (1989-91 and 2006-2011). Also, I am a member of the ACRL Intellectual Freedom Committee.
- I have just completed a term as president of the Fellowship of Christian Librarians & Information Specialists, a small group that meets annually during the ALA Annual Conference.
Molly Fogarty, member
- I am the Director of the Springfield City Library in Springfield, Massachusetts. Our system includes a Central Library and 9 Branch libraries. We serve a diverse community of over 150,000 residents.
- I have been very involved in the Massachusetts Library Association. I served as President in 2000, and Chair of the Legislative Committee from 1994-1999. , Massachusetts, Chapter Councilor from 2005-2008. I served on the MLA Executive Board from 1993-2008, in a variety of roles.
- In ALA., I was a member of the Committee on Legislation from 2004-2008, and served as Chair in 2007. I have been a member of the Chapter Relations Committee for three years, serving as Chair in 2008/2009.
Samantha Hines, member
- I am currently reference desk manager, social science librarian, and distance education coordinator at the University of Montana, Missoula. We are in the midst of some reorganization so my position/title/duties may change without notice any day here.
- I am the president of the Pacific Northwest Library Association for about three more weeks. I’m also pretty active in the Montana Library Association, currently on the intellectual freedom committee and a past chair of the Academic and Special Libraries division.
- In ALA I am the vice chair of the Distance Learning Section of ACRL and on the ACRL Intellectual Freedom Committee.

- Held several other offices in other Literacy organizations, some co-ops, and other non-profits
Chris Olson, member
- I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota and am the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA), which is the regional public library system for the seven-county metro area of the Twin Cities. Previous positions have included serving as director of a consortium of private academic libraries in Minnesota and as a public relations specialist for a regional library system based in northwestern Minnesota. I also serve as an adjunct faculty member for Dominican University and the St. Catherine University’s graduate school for Library and Information Science.
- I am a past president of the Minnesota Library Association. In addition to the three-year presidential rotation on the MLA Board of Trustees, I have also served another eight years in a variety of roles: intellectual freedom committee chair, legislative committee chair, and as the ALA Chapter Councilor. I have participated and chaired a number of committees, including nominating, communications, youth services, and our social responsibilities round table.
- In ALA I have served on Council as our state chapter councilor from 2004-2007. I’ve been a member of the CRC since 2008. I have represented the CRC on the Legislative Assembly for the last two years. I also served on local arrangement committees for both the ACRL and PLA national conferences.
Kimberlee Ried, member
- I'm head of public programs and marketing for the National Archives - Kansas City regional office, Kansas City, MO. Prior to being with the Archives, I was a teen services librarian for several years at public library in the KC area.
- I'm the immediate past president of the MO Library Association. I am also currently the Nominating Commitee chair for MLA. I've been a committee chair, division chair and special interest group chair during my seven years with MLA.
- Within ALA I served years ago on the now non-existent YALSA Teen Hoopla committee - it was their web site committee. In addition to CRC, I'm also serving on the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color publicity committee as they'll be in Kansas City in 2012 for their conference!
Mary Ann Tricarico, member
- I am the library director at the New England Institute of Art in Brookline, Massachusetts and am the immediate Past President of the New England Library Association.
- I have been a member, chair, or board member on numerous ALA committees and sections. Most recently, I completed a term for LAMA as juror for the John Cotton Dana Awards.
Joseph Eagan, ALA Executive Board liaison
- I've been the ALA Executive Board liaison to CRC for the past two years and hope that ALA President Roberta Stevens will appoint me to be your 2010-11 Board liaison. (The Board liaison assignments will be made in August.)
- Since 2006 I've been the Manager of the Olney Library, Montgomery County Public Libraries, in Olney, Maryland. Prior to my current position, I worked as a librarian for the Providence Public Library from 1977 to 1981 and the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore from 1981-2006.
- I've been an active member of the Maryland Library Association (MLA) for nearly 30 years. I've served on the following MLA committees and panels: Awards, Conference, Intellectual Freedom and Legislative. I was the MLA IF Officer for 4 years, the Maryland Chapter Councilor for 6 years and an Executive Board member for 10 years. I'm currently the co-chair of the MLA Author Award Endowment Committee.
- In terms of my ALA experience, I'm a past and current member of the ALA Conference Committee and chaired the Committee in 2004-05. I was a member and then chair of the ALA Council Orientation Committee. I co-facilitated the Council Forums (the informal meetings of the ALA Council) for 4 years. I was a member of the ALA Planning and Budget Assembly for 5 years, and I just completed a two-year term as a member of the ALA Budget Analysis and Review Committee. I was also twice elected by Council to serve on the ALA Committee on Committees, which appoints the members of the ALA Council committees. I've also been active in PLA and GLBTRT.
- I live in Towson, Maryland, with my life partner, James Cooke, who is the Projects and Planning Manager at Baltimore County Public Library.
