Libraries invited to apply for Great Stories Club grants on Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation

CHICAGO — Library professionals are invited to apply for the American Library Association’s Great Stories Club series on Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT). This thematic reading and discussion program series will engage underserved teens through literature-based library outreach programs and racial healing work.

Free virtual event with MARCH graphic novel creators offered as part of ALA’s Great Stories Club

The American Library Association (ALA) invites library professionals and their patrons to a free virtual event with Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell, co-author and illustrator of the acclaimed graphic novel series March. During the event, Aydin and Powell will speak with attendees about the Civil Rights Movement and their experience telling Congressman John Lewis’s story in March. 

The virtual event is supported by an ArtWorks Literature grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and will be held at 1:30 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, Sept. 12. 

Friends of Shelby Area District Library and Friends of the Ravenna Library receive United for Libraries’ Baker & Taylor Awards

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania — The Friends of the Shelby (Michigan) Area District Library and the Friends of the Ravenna (Nebraska) Library have been recognized with United for Libraries’ Baker & Taylor Awards for outstanding efforts to support their libraries. Each group receives $1,000 and a plaque from Baker & Taylor to honor their achievements.

100 libraries selected to lead Great Stories Club reading programs with underserved youth

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) has announced 100 libraries nationwide selected to take part in the Great Stories Club, a national grant program that supports reading and discussion programs for underserved teens.

The grantees represent 77 public libraries, 14 school/K-12 libraries, three college/university libraries, two community college libraries, three prison libraries, and one tribal library. They come from 35 states, the District of Columbia, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

ALA awards Spectrum Scholarships for 2018

CHICAGO - Today, the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services awards 2018-2019 Spectrum Scholarships to 62 exceptional students pursuing graduate degrees in library and information studies.  Since 1997, the ALA has awarded more than 1,100 Spectrum Scholarships.  In the 2018 application cycle, the Spectrum Scholarship Program received three times as many applications as there were available scholarships, and the majority of this year’s applicants were deemed highly fundable.  A prestigious committee of ten jurors selected this year’s Spectrum

ALA announces Diversity Research Grants

CHICAGO – The American Library Association’s (ALA) Office of Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018-2019 Diversity Research Grant. This grant financially assists researchers in completing a project that is closely tied to equity, diversity, and/or inclusion in the library and information sciences field.

 

AASL Beyond Words and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation award $100,000 in grants to two Houston schools

CHICAGO - Two Houston schools extensively damaged by Hurricane Harvey are the recipients of the 2018 catastrophic disaster relief grants offered as part of the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Beyond Words: The Dollar General School Library Relief Fund. Thompson Intermediate School and Moore Elementary School both suffered devastating losses to the school libraries in the hurricane and its aftermath.

American Dream Literacy Initiative celebrates 10 years at 2018 ALA Annual Conference

An American Library Association (ALA) adult literacy initiative funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation will celebrate its 10th anniversary at the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
