ALA adopts resolution urging Congress to extend whistle-blower protections

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) has adopted a resolution urging Congress to extend legal protections for whistle-blowers to employees of all national security and intelligence agencies, as well as non-federal  employees working for civilian contractors.

ALA calls for passage, signing of the USA Freedom Act

CHICAGO — At the American Library Associations’s recent Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits in Philadelphia, the ALA Council passed a resolution calling upon Congress to pass — and the president to sign — legislation supporting the reforms embodied in the USA Freedom Act.

Patricia Glass Schuman named lifelong member of United for Libraries board

PHILADELPHIA  At the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting, the board of United for Libraries voted unanimously to present past ALA President Patricia Glass Schuman with life membership on its board in honor of her many accomplishments and contributions to libraries both nationally and internationally throughout her career.  Her official position will be Board Member at Large.

BCALA announces winners of 2014 Literary Awards

PHILADELPHIA — The Black Caucus of the American Library Association, Inc. (BCALA) announced the winners of the 2014 BCALA Literary Awards during the Midwinter Meeting of the American Library Association in Philadelphia. The awards recognize excellence in adult fiction and nonfiction by African American authors published in 2013, including an award for Best Poetry and a citation for Outstanding Contribution to Publishing. The recipients will receive the awards during the 2014 Annual Conference of the American Library Association in Las Vegas.

ALA Council approves new Lemony Snicket Prize for Noble Librarians Faced with Adversity

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) Council, at a Tuesday session during the ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits, approved the new Lemony Snicket Prize for Noble Librarians Faced with Adversity.

The award, which ALA intends to present at its Annual Conference in Las Vegas, recognizes a librarian who “has faced adversity with integrity and dignity intact.” It will be given annually to a deserving librarian. If a suitable candidate is not found, the award will not be presented that year.

2014 Amelia Bloomer List highlights feminist books for young readers

PHILADELPHIA — The Amelia Bloomer Project, a product of the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table’s (SRRT) Feminist Taskforce, announced the 2014 Amelia Bloomer List at ALA’s Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, held Jan. 24-28, 2014.

The bibliography consists of well written and illustrated books with significant feminist content, intended for young readers from birth to 18 years old. This year’s list includes titles published between July 1, 2012 and Dec. 31, 2013.

2014 Over the Rainbow list recognizes quality GLBT fiction and non-fiction titles
