ALA to announce the next classics in children’s and young adult literature and media

CHICAGO — Children’s and young adult authors, illustrators and publishing groups are waiting in anticipation for the 2013 American Library Association (ALA) Youth Media Award announcements.   The ALA will announce 19 awards at 8 a.m. PT on Jan. 28 from the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.  The awards include the esteemed John Newbery Medal, Randolph Caldecott Medal, Coretta Scott King Book Awards and Michael L. Printz Award.

Erin McKean at ALCTS President’s Program in Chicago

CHICAGO — Erin McKean, founder of Wordnik.com and the former editor-in-chief of American Dictionaries for Oxford University Press, is the featured speaker at the President’s Program of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS).  The President’s Program is at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 1,  during the American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago.

Accepting appointments for free career counseling and resume reviews

CHICAGO - Free career counseling sessions and resume review help will be provided from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26 and 27, 2013 in the ALA JobLIST Placement Center during the American Library Association’s (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Seattle.  The sessions will be held in the JobLIST Placement Center which will be located on Level 4, Hall E, in the front of Aisle 300 of the Washington State Convention Center.

CHICAGO - As part of its continuing efforts to help job seekers and employers make connections, the ALA JobLIST Placement Center will once again host an Open House from 10:30 a.m. - noon on Sunday, Jan. 27th in the JobLIST Placement Center during the upcoming Midwinter Meeting in Seattle.  The Placement Center will be located on Level 4, Hall E, in the front of Aisle 300 of the Washington State Convention Center.

Author Jamaica Kincaid headlines Freedom to Read Foundation fundraiser

CHICAGO - The Freedom to Read Foundation will present author Jamaica Kincaid as the featured speaker at its annual banned/challenged author event and fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.  The event will take place from 7:30-10 p.m. at Town Hall Seattle, 1119 Eighth Ave. (a short walk from the Convention Center).

Dr. Jeanne Theoharis to keynote celebration of Dr. King’s enduring legacy

CHICAGO — Jeanne Theoharis, professor of political science at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, will keynote the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunrise Celebration during the American Library Association’s (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. The celebration will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 in room 611-614 of the Washington State Convention Center.

YALSA names 2013 William C. Morris Award finalists

CHICAGO — The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) , a division of the American Library Association (ALA), selected five books as finalists for the 2013 William C. Morris Award, which honors a book written for young adults by a previously unpublished author. YALSA will name the 2013 award winner at the Youth Media Awards at 8 a.m. on Jan. 28, in Seattle during the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting.
