ALA Council supports librarians sued for performing their professional duty

CHICAGO — In a response to recent lawsuits that “represent an attempt to repress the academic freedom of librarians expressing professional opinions,” the American Library Association (ALA) Council has passed a resolution urging publishers to refrain from such actions as filing libel suits against librarians who have publicly shared their professional opinions concerning the quality of publications.  Those suits bear striking similarities to Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) used to suppress the expression of public opinion, the resolution states.

ALA Council recognizes the contributions of libraries during emergencies

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) Council has passed a resolution recognizing the role of libraries and librarians in providing relief during recent disasters.

The resolution, passed at the ALA Annual Conference, held June 27 – July 2 in Chicago, acknowledges that many libraries across the country have provided library and emergency services in disasters including storms, fires, earthquakes and floods and applauds those actions;

ALA Council endorses Declaration for the Right to Libraries

CHICAGO — The  American Library Association (ALA) Council endorses the Declaration for the Right to Libraries and urges that ALA work to support and engage libraries and communities across the country in signing the declaration.

AASL announces 2013 Best Websites for Teaching & Learning

CHICAGO – The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) announced its 2013 Best Websites for Teaching & Learning at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Chicago, Ill. The annual list honors the 25 Internet sites which provide enhanced learning and curriculum development for school librarians and their teacher collaborators. Now in its fifth year, the list is considered the "best of the best" by AASL.

Dr. Mark Edwards, 2013 Superintendent of the Year and digital revolutionary, to speak at AASL President’s Program

CHICAGO — Mark Edwards, the 2013 American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Superintendent of the Year and recent host to President Obama during the announcement of the White House’s ConnectED initiative, will speak at the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) President’s Program at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29. Called the leader of a “digital revolution,” the Mooresville (N.C.) Graded School District (MGSD) Superintendent will speak on the fundamental rethinking of teaching and learning.
