Rita Moss recognized by RUSA BRASS for outstanding contributions to business librarianship

CHICAGO — Rita W. Moss, business and economics librarian and head of the social sciences team, Davis Library, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, is the 2012 recipient of the Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship - an annual honor presented by the Business and Reference Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) and sponsored by Gale Cengage Learning.

Ashley Maynor receives the 2012 Justin Winsor Essay Award from the Library History Round Table

CHICAGO —The Library History Round Table has awarded Ashley Maynor the 2012 Justin Winsor Prize. The award, $100 and a certificate, is presented annually to the author of an outstanding essay embodying original historical research on a significant subject of library history. The winning essay will be considered for publication in Information & Culture: A Journal of History. The award is named in honor of the distinguished 19th century librarian, historian and bibliographer who was also ALA's first president.

Library History Round Table announces Bernadette Lear as the Donald G. Davis Article Award recipient

CHICAGO —Bernadette Lear, Behavioral Sciences and Education Librarian at Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg, is the 2012 winner of the Donald G. Davis Article Award presented by the American Library Association (ALA) Library History Round Table (LHRT).  This award is given every second year to recognize the best article written in English in the field of United States and Canadian library history, including the history of libraries, librarianship and book culture in the previous two calendar years.

ALTAFF names Ryan and Welch ALA Trustee Citation recipients

PHILADELPHIA —  The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has named Richard J. Ryan and Gwendolyn B. Guster Welch the recipients of the ALA Trustee Citation.

The ALA Trustee Citation, established in 1941 to recognize public library Trustees for distinguished service to library development, honors the best contributions and efforts of the estimated 60,000 American citizens who serve on library boards. 

Three Friends of the Library groups win ALTAFF’s Baker & Taylor Awards

PHILADELPHIA — Three Friends of the Library groups will be recognized with Baker & Taylor Awards from the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), during ALTAFF’s Gala Author Tea, sponsored by ReferenceUSA, from 2 to 4 p.m. PDT on Monday, June 25 at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif.

2012 Jesse H. Shera Award recipients announced by the Library Research Round Table

CHICAGO — The Library Research Round Table (LRRT) of the American Library Association (ALA) has chosen the 2012 winners of the Jesse H. Shera Award for Distinguished Published Research and the Jesse H. Shera Award for the Support of Dissertation Research, which honors work that advances library research.

The Jesse H. Shera Award for Distinguished Published Research is given to the author(s) of a research article published in English during the calendar year and nominated by any member of LRRT or by editors of research journals in the field of library and information studies.

Applications for ALTAFF’s Best Friends Awards due June 15

PHILADELPHIA — The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is accepting applications for the seventh annual Best Friends Awards. Applications are due June 15, 2012.

Paul Kelsey wins the 2012 Scholastic Library Publishing Award

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) has named Paul Kelsey the recipient of the 2012 Scholastic Library Publishing Award. The honor, which will be presented during the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif., is bestowed on a librarian whose extraordinary contributions to promoting access to books and encouraging a love of reading for lifelong learning exemplifies outstanding achievement in the profession. Kelsey will receive a citation and $1,000 prize, donated by Scholastic Library Publishing.

Carolyn Larson recognized for service to RUSA MARS with My Favorite Martian Award

CHICAGO —Carolyn S. Larson, head of the Business Reference Section - Science, Technology & Business Division/Library of Congress, is the recipient of the 2012 My Favorite Martian Award for contributions to the MARS: Emerging Technologies in Reference Section of the Reference and User Services Association.

ALA and IIDA announce winners of the 2012 Library Interior Design Competition

CHICAGO — The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the Buildings and Equipment Section of the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA) have selected the winners of the 2012 Library Interior Design Competition. The biennial awards honor excellence in library interior design, incorporating aesthetics, design creativity, function and satisfaction of the client's objectives. Seven winners and three honorable mentions were chosen out of 117 projects submitted from throughout North America.
