Dr. Jeanne Theoharis to keynote celebration of Dr. King’s enduring legacy

CHICAGO — Jeanne Theoharis, professor of political science at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, will keynote the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunrise Celebration during the American Library Association’s (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. The celebration will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 in room 611-614 of the Washington State Convention Center.

New OLOS toolkit provides powerful new tools for library service to poor and homeless populations

CHICAGO — “Extending Our Reach: Reducing Homelessness through Library Engagement,” the latest toolkit from the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) is now available as a free print or digital edition.

Developed by the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) and the Office for Literacy and Outreach Services, “Extending Our Reach” offers tips, tools, resources, model programs, best practices and much more to assist librarians and library staffers in creating meaningful library services for people who are experiencing homelessness.

Panel to explore whistleblower protection at Annual Conference

CHICAGO — What is the line between protecting society and defending the truth? The ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Law and Political Science Section (LPSS) will present “National Security vs. the Right to Know,” a panel discussion during the 2012 ALA Annual Conference that will address the potential conflict between security concerns and the requirements of transparency, democracy, free press and the protection of whistleblowers.

2012 Rainbow Books list highlights quality GLBTQ books for children and teens

DALLAS – The 2012 Rainbow Books list, a joint project of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) and the Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) of the American Library Association (ALA), was announced at ALA’s Midwinter Meeting held Jan. 20-23 in Dallas.

2012 Amelia Bloomer List celebrates feminist perspective in books for young readers

DALLAS – The Amelia Bloomer Project, a product of the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table’s (SRRT) Feminist Taskforce, announced the 2012 Amelia Bloomer List at ALA’s Midwinter Meeting in Dallas, held Jan. 20-23, 2012.

The bibliography consists of well written and illustrated books with significant feminist content, intended for young readers from birth to 18 years old. This year’s list includes 78 titles published between July 1, 2010 and Dec. 31, 2011.

2011 Amelia Bloomer List announced

SAN DIEGO – The Amelia Bloomer Project, a product of the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table’s (SRRT) Feminist Taskforce, announced the 2011 Amelia Bloomer List at ALA’s Midwinter Meeting in San Diego, held Jan. 7-11, 2011.
