Booklist mission statement reaffirms path forward

CHICAGO – Booklist, the American Library Association’s book review journal, is forging a bold path forward as it dedicates itself to adapting to the evolving needs of its consumers.

In the past year alone, the landscape of librarianship, education, and publishing has been drastically altered by such events as a global pandemic and the urgent call for social justice, and Booklist has taken this opportunity to reexamine its mission and renew its commitment to libraries and the communities that they serve.

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) selects “Deacon King Kong,” by James McBride, published by Riverhead Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House LLC, as the winner of the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and "Fathoms: The World in the Whale," by Rebecca Giggs, published by Simon & Schuster, as the winner of the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. The selections were announced at the Reference and User Services Association's Book and Media Awards (BMAs) virtual event, sponsored by 

Sourcebooks and American Library Association collaborate on new series

Publishing partnership will feature wide-ranging selection of books and journals

CHICAGO — Sourcebooks, a leading independent publisher based in Chicago, and the American Library Association’s (ALA) book publishing imprint, ALA Editions|ALA Neal-Schuman, will collaborate on a new series that will promote easy and affordable access to a range of general interest library-and reading-related content.

Booklist’s 2020 Top of the List and Editors’ Choice announced

CHICAGO — Every January, Booklist publishes Editors’ Choice: lists of the best adult and youth books, and audiobooks of the past year. From these lists, we further select what we call the Top of the List: the single best title in seven categories—adult fiction, adult nonfiction, youth fiction, youth nonfiction, youth picture book, and adult and youth audiobooks. For the first time, Booklist will name Top of the List winners for Graphic Novels for Adult and Youth. 

ALA unveils shortlist for 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction

CHICAGO – The American Library Association (ALA) today announced the six books shortlisted for the esteemed Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction, awarded for the previous year's best fiction and nonfiction books written for adult readers and published in the United States.

Longlist for 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction announced

CHICAGO – A total of 46 books (26 fiction, 20 nonfiction) has been selected for the longlist for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction. The list is now available on the awards’ website. The six-title shortlist—three each for the fiction and nonfiction medals—will be chosen from longlist titles and announced on November 17, 2020.

The board is comprised of national leaders in readers’ advisory and collection development, as well as content and business experts who represent the widely diverse audiences that Booklist and ALA serve.

Libraries Transform Book Pick digital reading program returns Sept. 14-28 with an epic saga

CHICAGO – The Libraries Transform Book Pick will return Sept. 14-28, 2020 with its second ebook selection: Lauren Francis-Sharma’s “Book of the Little Axe,” published by Atlantic Monthly Press, an imprint of Grove Atlantic. During the lending period, ebook copies of “Book of the Little Axe” will be available without waitlists or holds through U.S. public libraries using OverDrive. Readers will only need a library card and the Libby app to borrow and read the ebook.
