Celebrate mobile library services during Bookmobile Saturday 2014

CHICAGO – Every day, bookmobiles bring the world to the communities they serve, extending library programs, services and much more beyond the library’s physical walls. Bookmobile Saturday, a series of programs and events highlighting the critical services bookmobiles provide, will be held on Saturday, June 28 during ALA’s 2014 Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

Celebrate libraries on the move on National Bookmobile Day

CHICAGO — Every day, bookmobiles bring the world to the communities they serve – from books, magazines and videos to job search assistance and much more. On April 16, join the nationwide celebrations as libraries across the country will celebrate the vital services bookmobiles provide on the fifth annual National Bookmobile Day during National Library Week @ your library®.

BCALA announces winners of 2014 Literary Awards

PHILADELPHIA — The Black Caucus of the American Library Association, Inc. (BCALA) announced the winners of the 2014 BCALA Literary Awards during the Midwinter Meeting of the American Library Association in Philadelphia. The awards recognize excellence in adult fiction and nonfiction by African American authors published in 2013, including an award for Best Poetry and a citation for Outstanding Contribution to Publishing. The recipients will receive the awards during the 2014 Annual Conference of the American Library Association in Las Vegas.

VA highlights new resources at ALA Annual Conference to end homelessness among veterans

CHICAGO — During ALA’s Annual Conference, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services highlighted new resources that librarians can use to help veterans who are homeless get back on their feet.

Mike Morgan and Larry Romans offer up to $15,000 in match challenge to grow the Stonewall Book Awards

CHICAGO — During the Stonewall Book Awards Brunch at ALA’s 2013 Annual Conference in Chicago, Mike Morgan and Larry Romans announced that they will match contributions of $25 or more ($10 for text donations) to the Stonewall Book Awards up to $15,000 in a year-long effort to grow the Stonewall Book Awards Endowment Fund. Donations to the endowment will be matched from July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014. 

Elturk honored as EMIERT Distinguished Librarian at Annual Conference, donates award to organizations

CHICAGO — Ghada Elturk, outreach librarian at the Boulder (Colo.) Public Library, was honored at ALA Annual Conference as the 2013 recipient of the ALA Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) Distinguished Librarian Award. Given biennially, the award recognizes a librarian for outstanding achievement and leadership in serving the community by significant collection building and outreach services and developing creative multicultural materials and programs.

2013 Diversity & Outreach Fair celebrates creating integrated and meaningful experiences for people with disabilities

CHICAGO — The ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) has selected 27 presentations for the 2013 Diversity and Outreach Fair, to be held from 3 p.m. – 5:30 p .m. on Saturday, June 29 in the Special Events area of Hall A1 at McCormick Place during ALA’s Annual Conference in Chicago.  

USCIS panel discussion to highlight immigrant civic integration efforts in local libraries at ALA Annual Conference

CHICAGO — During this year’s American Library Association Annual Conference & Exhibition in Chicago, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will convene a panel discussion to explore the important role public libraries play in serving immigrant communities throughout the United States.

Roy to present 2013 Coleman Lecture

CHICAGO - Dr. Loriene Roy, professor in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin and past-president of the American Library Association (ALA), will deliver the 2013 Jean E. Coleman Library Outreach Lecture, from 8:30 - 10 a.m. Monday, July 1 during ALA’s 2013 Annual Conference in Chicago, in room n427a of McCormick Place.   

Nation observes National Bookmobile Day @ your library

CHICAGO – The tightening of belts across the U.S. has almost everyone looking for ways to cut costs.  With entertainment being one of the first targets, your local library is driving to the rescue – literally – as bookmobiles are racing into communities bringing education, entertainment and enlightenment wherever they go.  Those communities will take time on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 to celebrate these heroes on wheels during National Bookmobile Day @ your library.
