American Dream Starts @ your library grant allows Illinois library to 'speak your language'

CHICAGO Through an American Dream Starts @ your library grant provided by the American Library Association’s Office for Literacy and Outreach Services and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the Eisenhower Public Library District in Norridge and Harwood Heights, Ill. has been able to expand its ESL collection and to begin hosting English language learning programs.

New Jersey libraries team up to teach valuable language skills through American Dream Starts @ your library grant

CHICAGO Three New Jersey libraries are teaming for results in the area of community engagement.

Through an American Dream Starts @ your library grant provided by the American Library Association and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, three Essex (N.J.) County libraries - Bloomfield, Montclair, and South Orange - have established a partnership to provide literacy assistance to all Essex County residents.

USCIS and ALA Committee on Literacy session to highlight library service to immigrants at 2014 ALA Annual Conference

CHICAGO The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will participate in a panel discussion to explore practical ways libraries are assisting immigrants in a session entitled, “U.S. Citizenship Starts at Your Library: Success Stories for Serving Immigrants in Your Community” during this year’s American Library Association’s Annual Conference in Las Vegas.  The panel will be held at 8:30 a.m.

Time to reskill: An action plan for literacy

CHICAGO – The American Library Association (ALA) Committee on Literacy will sponsor a discussion of the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) Survey and its ramifications for libraries during the 2014 ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas.  The session will be held from 3 - 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 in room N236 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Explore outreach services at Annual Conference

CHICAGO – Join the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) for two panel discussions on providing library services to underserved and underrepresented populations at the 2014 ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas. Both panels will take place from 8:30 - 10 a.m. and 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 29 in room N235 of the Las Vegas Convention Center. 
 
These two panel discussions will highlight library outreach areas that OLOS promotes along with its affiliates and related stakeholder groups and feature experts from the field of library outreach. 

2014 Diversity and Outreach Fair to celebrate successful family literacy initiatives, diversity in action ideas

CHICAGO — The ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) has selected 36 presentations for the 2014 Diversity and Outreach Fair, to be held from 3 p.m. – 5:30 p .m. on Saturday, June 28 in the Special Events area in Exhibits Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center during ALA’s Annual Conference in Las Vegas.  

The selected presentations will highlight innovative and successful library outreach initiatives and programs during a poster session open to all ALA attendees at Annual Conference. The theme of this year’s fair will be family literacy.

Virginia Bradley Moore to deliver 2014 Coleman Lecture

CHICAGO – Virginia (Ginny) Bradley Moore, former longstanding chair of the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Task Force and retired librarian from the Prince Georges County Memorial Library System in Oxon Hill, Md., will deliver the 2014 Jean E. Coleman Library Outreach Lecture. The lecture will take place from 8:30-10 a.m. on Monday, June 30, in room N231/233 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, during ALA’s 2014 Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

Celebrate the best in GLBTQ literature at the 2014 Stonewall Book Awards Brunch

CHICAGO — Join the ALA Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) and award winning authors in celebration of the very best in GLBTQ literature at the 2014 Stonewall Book Awards Brunch, held during the ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas. The 2014 Awards Brunch will take place from 10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Monday, June 30 at Paris Las Vegas, Champagne 1 ballroom.

Celebrate mobile library services during Bookmobile Saturday 2014

CHICAGO – Every day, bookmobiles bring the world to the communities they serve, extending library programs, services and much more beyond the library’s physical walls. Bookmobile Saturday, a series of programs and events highlighting the critical services bookmobiles provide, will be held on Saturday, June 28 during ALA’s 2014 Annual Conference in Las Vegas.
