CHICAGO — Every day, bookmobiles bring the world to the communities they serve – from books, magazines and videos to job search assistance and much more. On April 15, join the nationwide celebrations as libraries across the country will celebrate the vital services bookmobiles provide on the sixth annual National Bookmobile Day during National Library Week @ your library®.

Explore innovations in ELL community engagement @ ALA Midwinter

CHICAGO – Join the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services as three library literacy professionals from the Chicago area discuss successful and replicable programs and services geared toward English language learners. The session, titled “ELL Practitioners Panel: Innovations in Community Engagement” will be held from 3 - 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1 from 3 - 4 p.m. in room W183 at McCormick Place West.

ALA Announces 2014 American Dream Starts @ your library recipients

Funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, grants support literacy advancements at 22 libraries

CHICAGO — The American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Literacy and Outreach Services announces the selection of  22 libraries in 15 states to receive funding through the American Dream Starts @ your library grant initiative, generously supported by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. 

ALA offers unlimited virtual seats for ALA Youth Media Awards webcast

CHICAGO  — The eyes of the publishing world will turn to Chicago at 8 a.m. CT on Feb. 2, 2015, when the American Library Association (ALA) unveils the next classics in children’s and young adult literature.

Thousands of webcast viewers will log on and join more than 1,200 onsite audience members for the announcement of the 2015 ALA Youth Media Awards. The announcements are part of the ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits  taking place from Jan. 30 – Feb. 3 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

American Dream Starts @ your library grant allows California library system to expand ESL classes

CHICAGO –  Through an American Dream Starts @ your library grant awarded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to the American Library Association, the Riverside County (Calif.) Library System has been able to expand ESL classes for adult learners.

In this countywide program, volunteers are working with one-on-one tutoring to help individuals learn to read and write.

American Dream Starts @ your library grant allows Illinois library to 'speak your language'

CHICAGO Through an American Dream Starts @ your library grant provided by the American Library Association’s Office for Literacy and Outreach Services and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the Eisenhower Public Library District in Norridge and Harwood Heights, Ill. has been able to expand its ESL collection and to begin hosting English language learning programs.

New Jersey libraries team up to teach valuable language skills through American Dream Starts @ your library grant

CHICAGO Three New Jersey libraries are teaming for results in the area of community engagement.

Through an American Dream Starts @ your library grant provided by the American Library Association and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, three Essex (N.J.) County libraries - Bloomfield, Montclair, and South Orange - have established a partnership to provide literacy assistance to all Essex County residents.

CHICAGO — Since 2008, The American Dream Starts @ your library® grant initiative has supported English language learner programming in over 100 libraries in 24 states.  Learn about the opportunities and challenges libraries encounter as they provide innovative literacy services in their communities during ALA’s 2014 Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

USCIS and ALA Committee on Literacy session to highlight library service to immigrants at 2014 ALA Annual Conference

CHICAGO The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will participate in a panel discussion to explore practical ways libraries are assisting immigrants in a session entitled, “U.S. Citizenship Starts at Your Library: Success Stories for Serving Immigrants in Your Community” during this year’s American Library Association’s Annual Conference in Las Vegas.  The panel will be held at 8:30 a.m.

Time to reskill: An action plan for literacy

CHICAGO – The American Library Association (ALA) Committee on Literacy will sponsor a discussion of the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) Survey and its ramifications for libraries during the 2014 ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas.  The session will be held from 3 - 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 in room N236 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
