Tuliao swims to honor mentors and raise funds for Spectrum

Miriam Tuliao has announced that she will participate in the Foster Lake Cable Swims (Sanctioned OW, 2 Mile Cable National Championship) to raise funds for the Spectrum Scholarship Program. The event will take place on July 12th in Sweet Home, Oregon.  This is Tuliao's eleventh year swimming to raise funds for ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship Program.

Libraries celebrate June as GLBT Book Month™

CHICAGO – The American Library Association (ALA) and hundreds of libraries will celebrate June 2018 as GLBT Book Month™, a nationwide celebration of the authors and writings that reflect the GLBT experience.

The celebration is consistent with ALA’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. It also recognizes the significant contributions of GLBT authors.

Dali and Caidi recipients of 2018 David Cohen/EMIERT Multicultural Award

CHICAGO – Keren Dali, assistant professor at the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta, Canada and Nadia Caidi, associate professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information iSchool, are the recipients of the 2018 American Library Association (ALA) Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) David Cohen/EMIERT Multicultural Award for their article entitled "Diversity by Design.”

2018 Coretta Scott King Book Donation Grants Announced

CHICAGO — Art Aids Art and the eKhaya eKasi Art and Education Center in Khayelitsha, South Africa; the Athens Housing Authority, University of Georgia College of Education, and Parkview Community in Athens, GA; and the Uni Project in New York, NY have been selected to receive books as part of the 2018 Coretta Scott King Book Donation Grant program.

Nation celebrates the value of bookmobiles April 11, 2018

CHICAGO – Every day, bookmobiles help transform the communities they serve, providing everything from access to books, magazines and videos to job search assistance and much more.

On Wednesday, April 11, our nation celebrates National Bookmobile Day. For more than 100 years, bookmobiles have delivered information, technology and resources for life-long learning to Americans of all walks of life.

Twenty-five libraries selected for Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Great Stories Club pilot program

CHICAGO — Twenty-five libraries have been selected to participate in the pilot phase of the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Great Stories Club, a thematic reading and discussion program series that will engage underserved teens through literature-based library outreach programs and racial healing work, the American Library Association (ALA) announced.

The TRHT GSC is supported by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

American Library Association announces 2018 youth media award winners

DENVER — The American Library Association (ALA) today announced the top books, video and audio books for children and young adults—including the Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, Newbery and Printz awards—at its Midwinter Meeting in Denver, Colorado.

A list of all the 2018 award winners follows:

John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature:
“Hello, Universe” written by Erin Entrada Kelly, is the 2018 Newbery Medal winner. The book is published by Greenwillow Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.

Renée Watson, Ekua Holmes win 2018 Coretta Scott King Book Awards

DENVER — Renée Watson, author of “Piecing Me Together,” and Ekua Holmes, illustrator of “Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets,” are the winners of the 2018 Coretta Scott King Book Awards honoring African American authors and illustrators of outstanding books for children and young adults. David Barclay Moore, author of “The Stars Beneath Our Feet,” and Charly Palmer, illustrator of “Mama Africa! How Miriam Makeba Spread Hope with Her Song,” are the winners of the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent.

Eloise Greenfield is the 2018 recipient of the Coretta Scott King–Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement

DENVER– Eloise Greenfield is the recipient of the 2018 Coretta Scott King–Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement. The announcement was made today by the American Library Association (ALA), during the ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits held Feb. 9 – 13, in Denver, Colorado.

“Eloise Greenfield is a trailblazer whose extraordinary books of poetry and prose have influenced many and continue to resonate with children today. Her rich body of work inspires and enriches readers,” said Award Committee Chair Deborah D. Taylor.

'Little & Lion' and 'The 57 Bus' win 2018 Stonewall Children’s and Young Adult Literature Award

DENVER — “Little & Lion” by Brandy Colbert and published by Little, Brown and Company, and “The 57 Bus” by Dashka Slater and published by Farrar Straus Giroux are the 2018 recipients of the Stonewall Book Awards – Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Children’s & Young Adult Literature Award. The awards were announced today by the American Library Association’s (ALA) Stonewall Book Awards Committee of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Round Table, during the ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits held Feb. 9–13, in Denver.
