AASL seeks program reviewers for the AASL 2015 National Conference

CHICAGO - The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) is currently accepting applications for volunteers to participate in a blind review and scoring of concurrent session proposals for the AASL 17th National Conference & Exhibition, “Experience Education Evolution.”  To apply, please use the application form located at national.aasl.org/volunteers. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, Dec. 30.

Hackforge’s Mita Williams on new spaces at Masters Session, 2015 Midwinter Meeting

CHICAGO – Some of our oldest public libraries were born out of mechanics institutes, and many of our newest public libraries feature makerspaces. A lengthy continuum of organizations now seems to share many similarities with today’s libraries. In her ALA Masters Session, “Mechanic Institutes, Hackerspaces, Makerspaces, TechShops, Incubators, Accelerators, and Centers of Social Enterprise. Where do libraries fit in?” at the 2015 Midwinter Meeting, Mita Williams will offer a field guide to these new spaces and point out the differences that make a difference.

Trombone Shorty and Bryan Collier wrap up Midwinter Meeting with Music and Discussion

CHICAGO -- Internationally renowned, Grammy-nominated trombone and trumpet player Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews will get attendees on their feet to Wrap Up 2015 Midwinter Meeting in Chicago and Rev Up for Annual Conference in San Francisco. His energetic music at the Wrap Up/Rev Up performance, 2 - 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3 will be followed by a conversation with award-winning illustrator Bryan Collier.

Marisa de los Santos among the featured authors at the Gala Author Tea, sponsored by ReferenceUSA

PHILADELPHIA — Marisa de los Santos, Steve Berry, Elizabeth Berg, Thomas Perry, Marja Mills and Meg Cabot will be among the featured authors at United for Libraries’ Gala Author Tea, sponsored by ReferenceUSA, from 2-4 p.m. Central time on Monday, Feb. 2 at the 2015 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Chicago.

A light offering of tea, finger sandwiches and a variety of sweet treats will be served. A book signing will follow. United for Libraries will recognize the winners of the 2014 National Friends of Libraries Week Awards during the program.

ALCTS Midwinter Forum Talks Library Publishing

CHICAGO Library publishing is the featured presentation at the Midwinter Forum of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) at the upcoming ALA Midwinter Meeting in Chicago.    

The ALCTS Forum focuses on “Libraries as Publishers: Next Steps in Self-Publishing?”  The Forum takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 2.   Location will be available at a later date.  Look to the “News You Can Use” schedule for this and other important sessions.
