Riordan wins United for Libraries/Gale Trustee Conference Grant

PHILADELPHIA — United for Libraries has awarded the 2014 United for Libraries/Gale Trustee Conference Grant to Donna Gerardi Riordan, vice president of the board of trustees of the Orcas Island (Wash.) Public Library.

Riordan will receive $850 plus full conference registration to attend the 2014 ALA Annual Conference June 26-July 1 in Las Vegas. A formal presentation to Riordan will be made at the conference.

Nawar wins United for Libraries/SAGE Academic Friend Conference Grant

PHILADELPHIA — United for Libraries has awarded the 2014 United for Libraries/SAGE Academic Friend Conference Grant to Essraa Nawar of Leatherby Libraries, Chapman University, Orange, Calif.

Nawar will receive $850 plus full conference registration to attend the 2014 ALA Annual Conference June 26-July 1 in Las Vegas. A formal presentation to Nawar will be made at the conference.

Laurie R. King among authors at United for Libraries’ Gala Author Tea, sponsored by ReferenceUSA

PHILADELPHIA — Laurie R. King, Jean Kwok, James Rollins and Heather Gudenkauf will be among the featured authors at United for Libraries’ Gala Author Tea, sponsored by ReferenceUSA, at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 30 at the ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas.  

Applications for Citizens-Save-Libraries grants due May 5

PHILADELPHIA — Applications for cycle two of the Citizens-Save-Libraries grants from United for Libraries, made possible by a grant from the Neal-Schuman Foundation, are due May 5.

The 10 libraries that are selected will receive two days of onsite consultation by advocacy experts, who will help friends of the library groups, library directors and trustees develop individual blueprints for advocacy campaigns to restore, increase or save threatened library budgets.

United for Libraries designates Literary Landmark for William Stafford

PHILADELPHIA — United for Libraries, in partnership with Friends of Lake Oswego (Ore.)  Public Library designated the library a Literary Landmark in honor of William Stafford on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Gilmanton (N.H.) Year-Round Library receives town funding with help from United for Libraries

PHILADELPHIA — Gilmanton (N.H.) Year-Round Library, one of 10 recipients of United for Libraries' 2013 Neal-Schuman Foundation Grants, successfully passed a warrant article requesting $52,000 from the town of Gilmanton on March 11.

Applications for United for Libraries’ Baker & Taylor Awards due May 1

PHILADELPHIA – United for Libraries is accepting applications for the Baker & Taylor Awards, given to friends of the library groups and library foundations. Applications are due May 1, 2014.

Given annually since 2000, the Baker & Taylor Awards have recognized more than 40 groups for outstanding efforts to support their library. Each winning group receives $1,000.

Salem-South Lyon (Mich.) District Library passes millage increase with help from United for Libraries

PHILADELPHIA — Salem-South Lyon (Mich.) District Library, one of 10 recipients of United for Libraries' 2013 Neal-Schuman Foundation Grants, successfully passed a millage increase of .0495 for the library on Feb. 25. The millage increased passed by an almost 3-to-1 margin.

As part of the Neal-Schuman Foundation Grants program, the library’s advocates received expert advocacy training and tools for their campaign by United for Libraries. The training for this campaign was provided by Libby Post of Communication Services.

Philippe Petit to speak at United for Libraries’ President’s Program at Annual

PHILADELPHIA – United for Libraries will present Philippe Petit, subject of the Academy Award-winning 2008 documentary “Man on Wire,” at United for Libraries President’s Program from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 30 at the ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas.
