United for Libraries presents Public Service Award to Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.)

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  On May 1, United for Libraries Executive Director Sally Reed presented Sen. Jack Reed (D.-R.I.)  with United for Libraries’ Public Service Award for his support of libraries during a special reception in the Hart Senate office building.

Sen. Reed authored key sections of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and seeks to fix the No Child Left Behind education law that was signed into law nearly 14 years ago.

Mark Miller named ALA Trustee Citation recipient

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania – The American Library Association and United for Libraries has named Mark Miller, chair of the Loudoun County (Va.) Library Board of Trustees, a recipient of the ALA Trustee Citation.

The ALA Trustee Citation, established in 1941 to recognize public library Trustees for distinguished service to library development, honors the best contributions and efforts of the estimated 60,000 American citizens who serve on library boards. 

Beth Nawalinski named United for Libraries executive director

CHICAGO – Today the American Library Association announced Beth Nawalinski as the new executive director of United for Libraries, effective July 31, 2017. Nawalinski currently serves as deputy executive director of United for Libraries. Following a nationwide search, Nawalinski will fill the position being vacated by the retirement of Sally Reed.   

Take action for libraries during Virtual Library Legislative Day

For National Library Legislative Day, May 1-2, 2017, hundreds of library supporters will convene in Washington D.C., where they meet with their members of Congress to rally support for library issues and policies.

United for Libraries to dedicate Literary Landmarks™ for Children’s Book Week

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania — In celebration of  Children’s Book Week (May 1-7, 2017) United for Libraries will dedicate three Literary Landmarks™ celebrating children’s book authors. This program was spearheaded by Rocco Staino, director of the Empire State Center for the Book, and is presented in conjunction with the American Library Association/Children’s Book Council Joint Committee.
