Applications for United for Libraries/Thrift Books Friend Conference Grant due Jan. 15

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania — United for Libraries is accepting applications for the United for Libraries/Thrift Books Friend Conference Grant though Jan. 15, 2016.

The United for Libraries/Thrift Books Friends Grant enables one member of a Friends of the Library group at a public library to attend the ALA Annual Conference. Applicants must be first-time attendees and must be active in their public library Friends group. The winner will receive a grant of $850, plus full ALA Annual Conference registration.

Liz Moore among the featured authors at the Gala Author Tea, sponsored by ReferenceUSA

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania — Liz Moore, Janice Y.K. Lee, Val McDermid, Stephanie Danler, Jennifer Haigh and Robyn Carr will be among the featured authors at United for Libraries’ Gala Author Tea, sponsored by ReferenceUSA, from 2-4 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, Jan. 11 at the 2016 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Boston.

A light offering of tea, finger sandwiches and a variety of sweet treats will be served. A book signing will follow. United for Libraries will recognize the winners of the 2015 National Friends of Libraries Week Awards during the program.

United for Libraries to coordinate National Friends of Libraries Week, Oct. 18-24

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania — Friends of the Library groups and libraries across the country will be celebrating the 10th annual National Friends of Libraries Week Oct. 18-24, 2015.

National Friends of Libraries Week offers a two-fold opportunity to celebrate Friends – promoting the group in the community, raising awareness and increasing membership and also giving libraries and boards of trustees the opportunity to recognize the Friends for their help and support of the library.

United for Libraries to dedicate Wilder Homestead a Literary Landmark™

BRYN MAWR, PENNSYLVANIA — United for Libraries, in partnership with the New York Library Association, Empire State Center for the Book, and HarperCollins Publishers, will designate the Wilder Homestead in Burke, N.Y., a Literary Landmark™ during a celebration on Saturday, July 11.

The Homestead, the setting for Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Farmer Boy” (1933), is where Laura’s husband Almanzo grew up from 1857 until his family moved to a farm in Minnesota in 1875.

United for Libraries to present ‘Citizens Save Libraries’ workshop at ALA Annual Conference

United for Libraries names Roy B. Martin, IV ALA Trustee Citation recipient

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania - United for Libraries has named Roy B. Martin, IV, a Trustee at Norfolk (Virginia) Public Library, as a recipient of the ALA Trustee Citation.

The ALA Trustee Citation, established in 1941 to recognize public library trustees for distinguished service to library development, honors the best contributions and efforts of the estimated 60,000 American citizens who serve on library boards. 

Frederick Ruffner honored with National Friends of Libraries U.S.A. Award

NEW YORK -- Frederick Ruffner (1926-2014), founder of the Literary Landmarks™ program, was posthumously honored with United for Libraries’ National Friends of Libraries U.S.A. Award on May 4. United for Libraries Executive Director Sally Gardner Reed presented the award to Ruffner’s sons, Peter Ruffner and Rick Ruffner.

The ceremony took place at the George Bruce Branch of the New York Public Library in Harlem, which was being dedicated as a Literary Landmark in honor of Walter Dean Myers (1937-2014).

Susan Schmidt elected United for Libraries president-elect

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania — Susan Schmidt, immediate past president, Friends of the Little Falls Library (Bethesda. Maryland) and media assistant, Wood Acres Elementary School (Bethesda, Maryland), has been elected 2015-2016 United for Libraries vice president/president elect.
