United for Libraries accepting National Friends of Libraries Week Award applications through Dec. 3

PHILADELPHIA  — United for Libraries will present two awards of $250 to Friends of the Library groups for activities held during National Friends of Libraries Week (Oct. 21-27, 2012).

Applications for United for Libraries Trustee awards due Dec. 31

PHILADELPHIA — United for Libraries is accepting applications for the ALA Trustee Citation and the United for Libraries/Gale Outstanding Trustee Grant.  Applications for both awards are due Dec. 31, 2012.

United for Libraries to designate Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine a Literary Landmark in honor of L’Engle

PHILADELPHIA —  United for Libraries will designate the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York a Literary Landmark in honor of Madeleine L’Engle on Thursday, Nov. 29.

The Literary Landmark will be dedicated to recognize the church’s connection with L’Engle, a legendary children’s author who wrote the literary classic “A Wrinkle in Time” (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1962). She served as the church’s librarian for more than 40 years.

Elihu Burritt Library at Central Connecticut State University dedicated a Literary Landmark

PHILADELPHIA — The Elihu Burritt Library at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain was designated a Literary Landmark by United for Libraries  in honor of Elihu Burritt (1810-1879).

Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library designated a Literary Landmark in honor of Harvey Pekar

PHILADELPHIA — The Cleveland Heights (Ohio)-University Heights Public Library (Heights Libraries) was designated a Literary Landmark  in honor of Harvey Pekar (1939-2010), author of the iconic comic book “American Splendor,” on Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Lee Road Branch of Heights Libraries.

Friends of the Library groups recognized with United for Libraries’ Best Friends Awards

PHILADELPHIA —Nine Friends of the Library groups have received Best Friends Awards from United for Libraries.

Best Friends Awards are given to Friends groups for outstanding publicity and marketing materials that promote the group and its programs and projects. The awards do not evaluate the type or scope of Friends programs; rather, they evaluate the quality of the print and electronic materials used to promote Friends programs. Award categories include print newsletters, membership, digital publicity, program/special project publicity and fundraisers/book sales.

United for Libraries secures $75,000 from Neal-Schuman Foundation

Citizens-Save-Libraries grants will target 20 threatened communities for advocacy training

PHILADELPHIA — United for Libraries has secured $75,000 from the Neal-Schuman Foundation to support library advocacy at the local level for libraries with troubled budgets. The Citizens-Save-Libraries grants will send expert advocates to 20 locations over the course of two years to help friends of the library groups, library directors and trustees develop individual blueprints for advocacy campaigns to restore, increase or save threatened library budgets.

Strater Hotel designated a Literary Landmark by United for Libraries in honor of Louis L’Amour

PHILADELPHIA — Room 222 of the Strater Hotel in Durango, Colo., was recently dedicated a Literary Landmark in honor of Western author Louis L’Amour (1908-1988).

In addition to many other visits, for more than 10 years L'Amour, and often his family, spent the month of August staying in room 222 of the Strater Hotel. The room was directly above the Diamond Belle Saloon, where he said the sounds inspired him to write.
