Quaker day school library wins ALA’s 2016 Jaffarian Award for Greensboro sit-in program

CHICAGO — The library at Friends Seminary, a private Quaker day school in New York City, has been recognized by the American Library Association (ALA) for creating an exceptional program for eighth-graders about the Greensboro sit-ins of 1960.

As the recipient of ALA’s 2016 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming, the Friends Seminary library will receive $5,000 and a plaque recognizing their achievements.

Belpré Award celebrates 20 years of outstanding Latino children’s literature at ALA Annual Conference

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and REFORMA (The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking) will hold a special celebration to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Pura Belpré Award at the ALA Annual Conference in Orlando. The event will take place from 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 26 in Jr. Ballroom F of the Rosen Centre Hotel. The event is free with conference registration, and all conference attendees are invited to attend.

Fader to support 2016 ALSC Spectrum Scholar

CHICAGO – Ellen Fader, past-president (2005-2006) of The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has provided a generous donation to the Spectrum Scholarship for a  third year. Her contribution will support a student through the 2016-2017 school term, provide for a follow-up grant for a Spectrum Scholar alumnus entering the final semester of work in the Fall of 2016, plus discretionary funds to use towards job interviews. Scholarship recipients will be named in June 2016.
