Santa Barbara Public Library System chosen as site for 2016 Arbuthnot Lecture

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) announced that the 2016 May Hill Arbuthnot Committee has selected the Santa Barbara Public Library System (California) as the site of the 2016 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture featuring Pat Mora. The event will be co-sponsored by the Santa Barbara City College, a U.S. Department of Education Hispanic-Service Institution, and the University of California at Santa Barbara, which includes the Gervitz Graduate School of Education and the Center for Chicano Studies.

ALSC names eight more Great Websites for Kids

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, has added more sites to Great Websites for Kids, its online resource featuring hundreds of links to exceptional websites for children.

ALSC announces winners of 2015 Bound to Stay Bound Books, Melcher Scholarships

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) announced six scholarship winners for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Four winners were awarded the Bound to Stay Bound Books Scholarship, which is made possible by Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. All four recipients will receive $7,500 in scholarship aid for the 2015-2016 academic year. The four recipients are: Marta Denise Brandes-Meisener, La Mesa, California; Blanca Rosales Ginsberg, La Mesa, California; Lauren Gray, Monticello, Illinois; Jennifer Matsu, Provo, Utah.

Applications being sought for 2016 ALSC Bill Morris Seminar

 
CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), announced that it is seeking applications for the 2016 ALSC Bill Morris Seminar: Book Evaluation to be held on Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, prior to the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Boston, Ma.

Orsburn elected ALSC 2016-2017 president

CHICAGO — Elizabeth “Betsy” Orsburn, adjunct faculty, Drexel University, College of Computing & Infomatics, Philadelphia, has been elected vice president/president-elect of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). 

“I am honored to represent our dedicated community of children’s librarians, educators, editors, and other professionals that make up ALSC; and with your support, I am excited to take on this leadership challenge,” Orsburn said.

ALSC Releases white paper: 'Media Mentorship in Libraries Serving Youth'

CHICAGO – The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) announces the release of a new white paper, “Media Mentorship in Libraries Serving Youth.” This paper was written for ALSC by Cen Campbell, Claudia Haines, Amy Koester, and Dorothy Stoltz and adopted by the ALSC Board of Directors on March 11, 2015.

The paper explores the role of children’s librarians as mentors of digital media and calls on youth service librarians to support families in their intentional, appropriate and positive use of media.

ALSC releases 2015 Summer Reading list

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has updated and released three Summer Reading lists. The lists are full of book titles to keep children engaged in reading throughout the summer in order to help prevent the summer slide.
