Breakfast for Bill Speakers at 2018 ALSC National Institute

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA) announced a very special Breakfast for Bill at the 2018 ALSC National Institute. This keynote celebration will include authors and illustrators, Margarita Engle, Raúl Colón, and Mike Curato. The National Institute takes place September 27-29, 2018 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

ALSC provides $70k in Strengthening Communities Through Libraries grants to 14 libraries

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Strengthening Communities Through Libraries minigrants. These grants are made possible by a Youth Literacy grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. The fourteen minigrant recipients will each receive $5,000 to provide opportunities for STEAM learning during out-of-school time to children in their communities.

ALSC seeks member content editor for Everyday Advocacy Initiative

The Association for Library Service to Children(ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), seeks a member content editor for its Everyday Advocacy (EA) initiative. The mission of Everyday Advocacy is to educate youth services librarians on the importance of advocacy and to provide them with tools to assist in articulating their own value within the library profession and community. Applications for this position are due December 31, 2017.

New research finds Every Child Ready to Read curriculum leads to successful family engagement through libraries

CHICAGO – Libraries are taking a proactive approach toward engaging parents and caregivers in supporting the early literacy development of their children, and the Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library® (ECRR) Program is an excellent tool to ensure libraries’ success. These were two of the key findings of a study released this month by Dr. Susan B. Neuman, a professor of childhood education and literacy development at New York University.

Grace Lin to present Opening General Session at 2018 ALSC Institute

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), announced that award-winning author Grace Lin will present the Opening General Session at the ALSC National Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. This event will take place at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza on Thursday, September 27, 2018 and is sponsored by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.
 

ALA Announces $500,000 in First-time Grants to Develop Coding Programs in Libraries

The American Library Association (ALA) today announced more than $500,000 in grants for 28 libraries in 21 states plus the District of Columbia (full list below) to design and implement coding programs for young people. The grants are part of ALA’s ongoing Libraries Ready to Code initiative sponsored by Google to promote computer science (CS) and computational thinking among youth. It is the first time ALA has dedicated funding for CS programs in libraries.

ALSC now accepting applications for 2018 ALSC/Candlewick Press 'Light the Way' Grant

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the Library Service to Underserved Children and Their Caregivers Committee (LSUCTC) are now accepting online applications for the 2018 Light the Way: Library Outreach to the Underserved grant. This $3,000 grant, made possible by Candlewick Press in honor of Newbery Medalist and Geisel Honoree author Kate DiCamillo, will go to a library conducting exemplary outreach to underserved populations through a new program or an expansion of work already being done.

ALSC now accepting applications for 2018 Maureen Hayes Author/Illustrator Award

CHICAGO -- The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the Grants Administration Committee are now accepting online applications for the 2018 Maureen Hayes Author/Illustrator Award. This $4,000 award, made possible by an annual gift from Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing in honor of Maureen Hayes, brings together children and nationally recognized authors/illustrators by funding an author/illustrator visit to a library.
