CHICAGO — A new committee is set to start work on selecting the prestigious 2015 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction, awards that reflect the expert judgment and insight of library professionals who work closely with adult readers. For the first time in 2015, an independent bookseller chosen by the American Booksellers Association (ABA) is joining the committee, reflecting the impact and influence of these awards on general readers both inside and beyond the library and adding additional expertise.

CHICAGO – Virginia (Ginny) Bradley Moore, former longstanding chair of the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Task Force and retired librarian from the Prince Georges County Memorial Library System in Oxon Hill, Md., will deliver the 2014 Jean E. Coleman Library Outreach Lecture. The lecture will take place from 8:30-10 a.m. on Monday, June 30, in room N231/233 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, during ALA’s 2014 Annual Conference in Las Vegas.
CHICAGO — Award-winning crime writer Karin Slaughter will be a featured speaker at the 2014 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence award ceremony, where the two winners will be announced. The event will take place from 8 -10 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, during ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas, and the two winning authors (one for fiction, one for nonfiction) will each take home $5,000 with their medal.
CHICAGO — Legendary best-selling youth author and two-time Newbery Medal winner Lois Lowry will be joined by Academy Award-winning actor Jeff Bridges at Barbara Stripling’s ALA President’s Program & Awards Presentation, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 29 at the American Library Association Annual Conference. Stripling will conduct an interview with Lowry, then Bridges will join them to talk about the movie version of Lowry’s “The Giver,” in which he stars and which is scheduled for an August release.
