Amy Gammon receives AASL Inspire Special Event Grant

CHICAGO – Amy Gammon, reading teacher at Greenport Elementary School in Greenport, New York, is one of six school librarians from across the country receiving a 2020 American Association of School Librarians' (AASL) Inspire Special Event Grant. Made possible by the generosity of AASL member Marina “Marney” Welmers, the grant program provides funds for public middle or high school libraries to plan a special event to enhance student learning.

Nora Wiltse receives the American Library Association 2020 Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce Nora Wiltse, teacher-librarian at John C. Coonley Elementary School, as the recipient of the 2020 Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award. Ms. Wiltse, a leading advocate for librarians and libraries in the Chicago Public Schools, devotes her time and talent and inspires others to make positive changes in the profession of librarianship.

Alice Knapp, president of the Ferguson Library, wins 2020 Sullivan Award

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce the 2020 Peggy Sullivan Award for Public Library Administrators Supporting Services to Children was awarded to Alice Knapp, president of the Ferguson Library (Stamford, Connecticut).  The Sullivan Award is presented annually to an individual in a library administrator role who has shown exceptional understanding and support of public library service to children.  With the cancellation of the ALA Annual Conference, the award will be presented at the Award Ceremony and Reception Sunday, Jan.

'The Power Project' receives AASL Roald Dahl's Miss Honey Social Justice Award

CHICAGO – The Power Project from the Chinese American International School in San Francisco, California, is the recipient of the 2020 American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Roald Dahl's Miss Honey Social Justice Award. Sponsored by Penguin Random House, the Roald Dahl Award recognizes collaboration between school librarians and teachers in the instruction of social justice using school library resources.

Stefanie Throndson receives AASL Innovative Reading Grant

CHICAGO – Stefanie Throndson, district librarian at New Hampton Elementary in New Hampton, Iowa, is the recipient of the 2020 American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Innovative Reading Grant. Sponsored by Capstone, the $2,500 grant supports the planning and implementation of a unique and innovative program for children that motivates and encourages reading, especially with struggling readers.

Martha Hickson receives AASL Intellectual Freedom Award

CHICAGO – Martha Hickson, school librarian at North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, New Jersey, is one of two recipients of the 2020 American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Intellectual Freedom Award. Established in 1982 and sponsored by ProQuest, the award is given to a school librarian for upholding the principles of intellectual freedom as set forth by AASL and ALA.

Donna Morris receives AASL Intellectual Freedom Award

CHICAGO – Donna Morris, school librarian at Daniel Boone Elementary in Richmond, Kentucky, is one of two recipients of the 2020 American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Intellectual Freedom Award. Established in 1982 and sponsored by ProQuest, the award is given to a school librarian for upholding the principles of intellectual freedom as set forth by AASL and ALA.

ALA awards additional 13 Library Census Equity Fund grantees

WASHINGTON — The American Library Association (ALA) and Capital One announced the names of 13 additional libraries receiving Library Census Equity Fund mini-grants of $2,000 to bolster their service to hard-to-count communities and help achieve a complete count in the 2020 Census.
