Ashley Mitchell Named a 2024 Core Emerging Leader

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures is pleased to announce that Ashley Mitchell has been selected as a Core Emerging Leader (EL). Mitchell serves as Adult Services Librarian at Camden County Library System in Voorhees, NJ. She has over 20 years of library experience in various departments. She recently chaired the New Jersey Library Association’s Equity & Mentorship Task Force, completed their Emerging Leaders program, and led her library’s Diversity & Inclusion Team.

Alison Van Norman Named a 2024 Core Emerging Leader

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures is pleased to announce that Alison Van Norman has been selected as a Core Emerging Leader (EL). Van Norman serves as the Outreach and Marketing Librarian for Elon University, where she plans and markets library events and programs and acts as liaison to the Art, Music, and Performing Arts departments. She enjoys creating low-stress environments for students, helping them familiarize themselves with library spaces and staff, and then seeing them return to study and engage in programs. She received her MLIS from UNC-Greensboro.

Carrie McClain Named a 2024 Core Emerging Leader

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures is pleased to announce that Carrie McClain has been selected as a Core Emerging Leader (EL). McClain serves as the Chief Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Officer for Tulsa City-County Library, where she works cross-departmentally to envision and implement their equity, diversity and inclusion strategy. She is a member of their executive leadership team and enjoys running staff workshops. She possesses a Masters in Human Relations, has worked in ED&I roles since 2016, and joined the library field in 2022.

Choice announces the Outstanding Academic Titles of 2023

MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Choice Outstanding Academic Titles (OAT) list for 2023 has been announced. This prestigious list, released today, reflects the best scholarly titles reviewed by Choice during the previous calendar year, as chosen by the editors. This year’s list features 499 books from 109 publishers. 

Bill Mickey, Choice editorial director, remarked, "After sorting through the several thousand titles we reviewed this year, we’re proud to present the best of the bunch. Congratulations to the authors, editors, and publishers on this incredible collection of scholarship."

CHICAGO–Core is now accepting applications for the Online Course Scholarship for Library Professionals from Developing Countries to participate in our online Fundamentals courses held between January 8, 2024 and June 28, 2024. One free seat per session is available to librarians and information professionals from developing countries.

AASL Announces Inaugural Toor Scholarship Recipients

CHICAGO – Eight school librarians from across the country have been awarded an American Association of School Librarians' (AASL) Toor Scholarship for Strong Public-School Libraries. The Toor Family, in honor of their parents, Jay and Ruth Toor, established the Toor Scholarships for Strong Public-School Libraries.  The scholarships are awarded to public school librarians who have created and implemented a local public awareness/marketing campaign that promotes and positions their school library as a necessary resource in the community.

Hawthorne Elementary School Wins ALA’s 2023 Jaffarian Award for Growing Readers, Growing Leaders Program

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) has awarded its 2023 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award to Hawthorne Elementary School in Louisville, Kentucky for the Growing Readers, Growing Leaders program.

The $5,000 Jaffarian Award, supported by ALA’s Cultural Communities Fund, recognizes excellence in humanities programming in school libraries that serve grades K-8.
