CHICAGO -- “The Critical Component: Standards in the Information Exchange Environment,” edited by NISO Executive Director Todd A. Carpenter, is now available in and e-book bundle. The bundle includes both a PDF file and an EPUB file, one of the many standards covered in the book. "The Critical Component" clarifies the importance of standards in 21st Century libraries, information services and publications and includes chapters and case studies on the:

  • overall need for standards in content distribution;
  • formality of standards;
  • process and players involved in standards development;
  • description of information objects, digital preservation, identifiers, marketing standards and more.

While most people are generally unaware of how critical standards are, everyone working with library systems, circulation, resource sharing, digital initiatives, preservation, collections or special collections and even public services can benefit from an improved understanding of standards in the systems they use each day.

“The Critical Component: Standards in the Information Exchange Environment” is now available as a downloadable electronic bundle (EPUB and PDF files), ALA Store Item number 8100-7445 for $55 (ALA member price $49.50).  The bundle joins the 320-page print version of the title in the online ALA Store. Both versions can be purchased online or from ALA at 1 (800) 545-2433, press 7.
