CHICAGO — Reflecting on achievements and presenting evidence of enhanced knowledge and skills underpin many professional and educational qualifications. Building a portfolio is key to recording and demonstrating this professional development and gaining official recognition in the form of Professional Registration qualifications. Thoroughly updated to reflect the new requirements of the revamped suite of Professional Registration qualifications from CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals), the third edition of “Building Your Portfolio: The CILIP Guide,” published by Facet Publishing and available through the ALA Store, is an essential resource for producing a successful portfolio. Set out in a user-friendly format and covering each element of a portfolio, this guide edited by Kath Owen and Margaret Watson is jam-packed with examples, useful hints and tips, personal contributions from successful applicants, Web links and further reading to help readers develop a top-notch portfolio. The role of the VLE, new submission routes including e-submission, and the new route to Revalidation are all clearly explained.
Owen chairs the CILIP Professional Registration and Accreditation Board and was a member of the Future Skills Project Board, which worked on professional registration and the PKSB (Professional Knowledge and Skills Base). Until her retirement, she was a senior manager in Nottinghamshire Public Libraries with a particular interest in staff development. She revalidated her Fellowship in 2014. Watson was president of CILIP 2003–4; the main theme for her presidency was continuing professional development (CPD). She chaired CILIP’s Qualifications Framework Steering Group and CILIP’s Ethics Panel. Now retired, she works as a consultant and has facilitated training for CILIP Assessment Panels and the CILIP Mentor Scheme.
