Financial management for librarians—a new eCourse

CHICAGO — ALA Editions announces a new eCourse, Financial Management and Budgeting for Librarians, facilitated by Sean Gaffney. This four-week eCourse starts Monday, May 11, 2015.

Managing a budget and handling basic financial literacy can be daunting and overwhelming, but the ability to do so is crucial for librarians. In this course, Sean Gaffney, librarian and financial analyst, will guide you through concepts like revenue models, budgets types, internal controls, resource allocation, financial planning, acquiring outside resources and more.

You will gain an understanding of both the theory and practice behind strategic financial resource management and learn about how these concepts relate to leadership, management and overall strategic planning. You’ll also walk away from this course with an understanding of budgeting and finance as well as the tools to expand your knowledge on your own and how to put it into practice at your library.

This course includes discussion questions between Sean Gaffney and other participants, which is a great way to learn by hearing others’ questions and perspectives. It also includes an optional paper.

After participating in this eCourse, you will:

  • understand what types of revenue opportunities are available to libraries—public, academic and special;
  • understand the definition of a budget and how budgets are developed and modified;
  • understand how both internal and external factors lead libraries to change their budgets;
  • have knowledge of tools and resources that you can use after the course to continue expanding your knowledge.

About the Instructor

Sean Gaffney is a manager in the Research and Analysis team at PwC. Prior to joining PwC, Sean worked for Archer Daniels Midland in a variety of roles, including head research librarian, manager of information services and senior information scientist. He holds an MBA in Accounting from Saint Leo University, an MLIS from Kent State University and a Certificate of Advanced Study in LIS from the University of Illinois. Sean has been a Part-time Faculty member at San Jose State University’s School of Information since 2008 and has taught several CPE courses for SLA.

Registration for this ALA Editions eCourse, which begins on May 11, 2015, can be purchased at the ALA Store. Participants in this course will need regular access to a computer with an Internet connection for online message board participation, viewing online video, listening to streaming audio (MP3 files), and downloading and viewing PDF and PowerPoint files.
