PHILADELPHIA – United for Libraries will host “Nuts & Bolts for Trustees, Friends and Foundations” from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 27 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, S219, during the ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas.
Jan Masaoka, director and editor in chief of Blue Avocado (www.blueavocado.org), will speak on “Libraries, Advocacy and the Meaning of Life.” Masaoka was executive director of CompassPoint for 14 years, a consulting and training firm for nonprofits. She is an eight-time designee as one of the nonprofit nation’s “Fifty Most Influential People,” and in 2003 she was named “Nonprofit Executive of the Year” by “Nonprofit Times.”
Robert Karatsu, library director of the Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Public Library, will speak on “The Nuts and Bolts of Working with your Friends, Foundation and Library Board (and Dealing with Your Library Director All at the Same Time…).” In addition to being the library director, Karatsu also acts as the CEO of the library foundation and staff liaison to the friends of the library and the library board of trustees. In 2013, the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library was awarded the National Medal for Museum and Library Services, the nation’s highest honor that can be bestowed upon a museum or library, and was invited to the White House to accept the award from First Lady Michelle Obama.
Roundtable discussions will be held on marketing and public relations, academic friends of the library groups, book clubs, library programming, evaluating the library director, and more.
