United for Libraries adds ‘Evaluating the Library Director’ course as part of Trustee Academy
For Immediate Release
PHILADELPHIA – The course “Evaluating the Library Director,” led by past ALA president Sarah Ann Long, has been added to United for Libraries’ Trustee Academy, a series of online courses to help library Trustees become exceptionally proficient in their roles on behalf of their libraries.
“Evaluating the Library Director” covers understanding the importance of an annual evaluation of the library director, planning to evaluate, methods of evaluation, tools and other approaches, additional considerations and avoiding common problems.
Long is professor of practice and coordinator of continuing and professional education at Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science in River Forest, Ill. She was the executive director of the North Suburban Library System in Wheeling, Ill., for more than 20 years. Long was president of ALA in 1999-2000 and is a past president of the Public Library Association. In her more than 40 years of library leadership, she has worked with libraries and library organizations in Illinois, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Georgia.
“Sarah Ann Long, as a former president of ALA, is one of our profession’s most highly regarded members,” says United for Libraries Executive Director Sally Gardner Reed. “It is a real privilege to have someone of her caliber lead this course on evaluating the library director.”
Taught by professionals in the field, Trustee Academy courses are available for individual registration or as a full curriculum with discounted pricing per course. In addition, a board of trustees can sign up for further discounts. All courses are recorded webcasts, in order to allow trustees flexibility in completing the courses, which can be viewed on an individual basis or in a group setting. Certificates of completion are provided for each course.
Though a sixth course has been added to the Trustee Academy, the cost for the series is the same – just $225 per board for United for Libraries individual and group members. For complete pricing information, visit www.ala.org/united/trustees/trustee_academy/course-info.
United for Libraries offers discounted pricing for states or regions that want to purchase the series as a way to assist in fulfilling their mission for trustee education. The prices for state- or region-wide purchase are as low as $59 per library for the full board of trustees and the library director to complete all Trustee Academy courses. States that have purchased the Trustee Academy for their libraries include Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey and Utah.
