BYOL! New online course from AASL helps participants 'bring your own lessons'

CHICAGO — During BYOL: Bring Your Own Lessons into the 21st Century!, the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) newest e-Academy course, participants will learn about AASL’s Best Websites for Teaching and Learning and how best to integrate them into a lesson plan. The facilitators will then walk participants through the submission of their plan to AASL’s Standards for the 21st-Century Learner Lesson Plan Database. This six-week, self-paced course facilitated by Liz Deskins and Christina Dorr will begin Jun. 24, 2013. Registration and additional course information are available at www.ala.org/aasl/eacademy.

During the course, participants will learn to design an inquiry lesson plan based on the criteria set forth in Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Programs and embedded into the Standards for the 21st-Century Lesson Plan Database. Participants will gain experience integrating web 2.0 tools into lesson design through introduction to websites recognized as AASL Best Websites for Teaching and Learning. They will then have the option to submit finished plans for publication in the lesson plan database.

Liz Deskins has spent 20 years in school librarianship, fueled by many literacy initiatives and changes in education. She has learned a great deal from whole language, literature based teaching, project based learning, inquiry learning and the Literacy Collaborative reading model, but mostly that skills are needed to read as well as exposure to quality literature.

Christina Dorr has spent the past 18 years in school library centers.  She has a Ph.D. in education, focusing on literature and literacy, from the Ohio State University, and has taught adjunct for OSU and three other Ohio universities. She has been trained in the Literacy Collaborative reading model and has attended, and given, numerous workshops, presentations and pre-conferences on literature and literacy.

AASL e-Academy courses are led in Moodle, a Web-based online learning system that attendees access from their browser. Each course is designed with the busy school librarian in mind - participants can complete coursework at a time that is most convenient for them.

AASL e-Academy courses are designed to give participants 12 hours of learning led by experts in the school library field.  Detailed descriptions of available courses and registration information are available on the AASL e-Academy pages. Fees for BYOL are as follows $149 for AASL members; $149 for retired AASL members; $113 for student AASL members; $224 for ALA members; and $336 for nonmembers.
