CHICAGO - ALA Editions announces another session of its best-selling workshop, "Building a Music Collection that Brings People to Your Library" with Matthew Moyer and Andrew Coulon.

Despite the rise of digital music, CDs are still in great demand at libraries everywhere. In addition, the digital age offers librarians the potential to build collections in ways they never could before.  In this new workshop, 2012 Library Journal Movers & Shakers Matthew Moyer and Andrew Coulon will show how your library can build a modern collection for a modern audience, with a close look at how physical and digital collections can complement each other. Beginning with a survey of current genres, demonstrating how to keep up on what’s popular with your community, they’ll proceed to examine the state of collections and suggest strategies to keep your collection current even on a tight budget. This 90-minute workshop will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20th, 2013.
Topics include:
  • Tools and resources for assessing the quality of your current collection
  • Understanding the value of maintaining a dynamic, current music collection, with tips for doing it on a tight budget
  • How to use your music collection to market the library as a whole
  • Ways the library can work with local musicians to build community partnerships and the music collection simultaneously

Matthew Moyer is Reference Librarian in the Popular Media Department and Andrew Coulon is Integrated Library Services Librarian at Jacksonville Public Library in Florida. Innovators in developing public library music collections, they built a local music collection and corresponding website for the library, helping develop a process of “musical readers advisory” using librarian-generated playlists and music suggestions for patrons.
