Making the case for a relational approach to information literacy

CHICAGO — In “Ways of Experiencing Information Literacy: Making the Case for a Relational Approach,” published by Chandos Publishing and available through Neal-Schuman Publishers, Susie Andretta offers an investigation of the relational approach to examining information literacy from the perspective of the learner and the educator in both academic and other professional environments.
Andretta illustrates this relational approach with concrete examples that show how to measure the impact of the information literacy experience through the application of newly developed information literacy practices to unknown situations (described as Transfer), or through the changes in the learner’s view of the world (described as Transformation). This learner-centered view of information literacy will especially interest educators who wish to go beyond teaching information skills, as well as researchers interested in using the relational framework to examine pedagogical experiences from the learner’s perspective.
Andretta is the editor of the Journal of Information Literacy and a senior lecturer in Information Management at London Metropolitan University, UK. She has published extensively on information literacy education and has contributed to international initiatives on information literacy in collaboration with UNESCO and the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA). Andretta’s current research interests include the examination of transliteracy, the new literacy operating in a social media landscape.
