CHICAGO — The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has released a new publication focused on increasing a school librarian’s ability to analyze and articulate data sets. “The Power of Data: An Introduction to Using Local, State, and National Data to Support School Library Programs,” written by Sandra Andrews, guides school librarians through the effective use of data in order to influence school library program stakeholders. The publication is available in both print and e-book formats, as well as in a print/e-book bundle, and can be purchased through the ALA online store.
“The Power of Data” discusses the use of data sets to establish goals for school library programs. Highlighting data available at the local, state and national levels, the book examines how school librarians can use available data to influence decisions at the local level. The book guides school librarians in the effective use of existing data and in articulating the analysis of that data to the people who need the information, including principals, superintendents, school boards, parents, teachers and students.
"In our work with students, school librarians consistently underscore the value of not just collecting sources of information, but also developing the skills to abstract content and construct meaning from the information," said Susan Ballard, AASL president. "That is why school librarians will be instinctively drawn to this fabulous new publication from AASL as it provides a means to learn to use data more effectively to help construct meaning for local decision-makers about the value of the school library program."
Sandra Andrews, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the department of library and information studies. She has worked as both a school librarian and a district media supervisor. Andrews has presented regionally and nationally on school library topics, including the use of standards, technology integration and benchmarking. She has written in the area of curriculum, technology integration and the use of data in developing exemplary programs.
