Tulare County librarian to discuss matching people with jobs at national conference

Washington, D.C. — Since the economic downturn began a few years ago, more and more people have turned to libraries for job assistance and e-government tasks. Consequently, workforce development has become an expanded, new service role for libraries.

To help community leaders learn more about workforce development and e-government grants, Tulare (Calif.) Deputy County Librarian Jeff Scott will discuss job assistance strategies at the 2012 American Library Association Conference from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2012  in Anaheim, Calif.  

Scott, who is from Visalia, Calif., will address the conference during the session “E-Government in Action—Matching People with Jobs.” The Tulare County Library recently received an e-government grant for “Job in a Box,” an innovative program that helps the unemployed through automated book vending machines that contain resources for job seekers. The “Job in a Box” machines include 300 books that focus on workforce needs, such as interviewing, career education and interviewing.

In addition to Scott’s presentation on Tulare County workforce development, the conference session will feature several grant recipients who will discuss the ways that their innovative programs connect people with jobs. Event speakers will include representatives from the Institute for Museums and Library Services and the New Jersey State Library Program, and grant recipients from the Palm Beach County Workforce Alliance (Fla.).
