CHICAGO — Librarians planning celebrations for YALSA’s annual literacy initiatives can now turn to a new, comprehensive resource: "Teen Read Week™ and Teen Tech Week™: Tips and Resources for YALSA’s Initiatives," the first book in the division’s new Best of YALS series. Edited by Megan Fink, a middle school librarian at the Charlotte (N.C.) Country Day School, "Teen Read Week and Teen Tech Week" compiles the best articles on teen literacy and teen information literacy from YALSA’s award-winning quarterly journal, Young Adult Library Services.

More than 30 articles offer ideas on best practices, programming and collection development and marketing and outreach for both events. Special focus is devoted to celebrating Teen Tech Week in challenging situations, such as schools or in libraries with small budgets. Former YALSA President Judy Nelson contributes a thought-provoking foreword, and popular YA authors Walter Dean Myers and Cynthia Leitich Smith both offer contributions on teen reading and technology and how those subjects have affected their careers.

Appendices include YALSA’s white papers on teen services, YALSA’s Teens and Social Networking Toolkit (PDF), YALSA’s Ultimate Teen Bookshelf and publicity tools for promoting both Teen Read Week and Teen Tech Week.

Released just in time for librarians to begin planning for Teen Tech Week 2011, March 6-12, "Teen Read Week and Teen Tech Week" is sure to be an indispensable tool for librarians in schools and communities across the country.
"Teen Read Week and Teen Tech Week" is available at the ALA Store, www.alastore.ala.org, or by calling 1 (866) SHOP-ALA. A limited number of copies will be available at ALA’s Midwinter Meeting in San Diego, Jan. 7-11. The book costs $31.50 for ALA members and $35 for nonmembers.

For more than 50 years, YALSA has been the world leader in selecting books, videos and audiobooks for teens. For more information about YALSA or for lists of recommended reading, viewing and listening, go to www.ala.org/yalsa/booklists, or contact the YALSA office by phone, (800) 545-2433, ext. 4390, or e-mail, yalsa@ala.org.
