CHICAGO — The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) extended the early bird registration deadline to Sept. 17 for the Young Adult Literature Symposium, which will be held Nov. 5-7, at the Albuquerque (N.M.) Marriott. Registrants must take advantage of the lowest rate for symposium registration by Sept. 17 at at www.ala.org/yalitsymposium.
The 2010 theme is “Diversity, Literature, and Teens: Beyond Good Intentions.” The Young Adult Literature Symposium is funded in part by the William C. Morris Endowment.
Registrants will save more than 25 percent over advanced and onsite registration fees, but only through Sept. 17. Early bird registration costs $195 for YALSA members, as well as members of the New Mexico Library Association; $245 for ALA personal members; $300 for nonmembers; and $50 for students, who must be enrolled full-time in a library and information science program. Rooms at the Albuquerque Marriott in Uptown Albuquerque are offered at a special rate for registrants of $99 per night. Registration for the symposium includes a welcome reception on Friday night, educational sessions on Saturday and Sunday, a happy hour on Saturday evening and a general closing session on Sunday. YALSA will offer pre-symposium special events that require additional registration on Friday, including:
- a full-day preconference (“On Beyond Stonewall: The Uphill Journey of Young Adult Fiction with Gay/Lesbian/Queer Content, 1969-2010”),
- three mini forums on teen readers’ advisory, street lit and urban teens and fat acceptance in YA literature and
- hot air balloon rides.
On Saturday, registrants can add the Bill Morris Memorial Author Luncheon and a reception and tour of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center to their registration.
