Preconference workshops at AASL national conference help school library professionals rise to the challenge
CHICAGO – The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) 16th National Conference & Exhibition promises to help school library professionals rise to the challenges of their careers with its offering of hands-on, full-day preconference workshops. The conference, “Rising to the Challenge," will take place Nov. 14-17, 2013, in Hartford, Conn. Full-day preconference workshops will be held Nov. 13. More information is available on the national conference website at national.aasl.org/preconferences.
In the workshop “Playing a Story: Creative Writing for Students through Non-Digital Interactive Text Game Design,” presenter Brian Mayer will demonstrate how to use game design to meaningfully engage students in the writing process and still meet national standards – including the AASL “Standards for the 21st-Century Learner” and the Common Core State Standards. Participants will explore interactive text, the design process and take away the knowledge of how to integrate these concepts into collaborative projects that have students designing playable stories of their own.
During their workshop “Friction: Teaching Slow Thinking and Intentionality in Research,” presenters Debbie Abilock, Tasha Bergson-Michelson and Jole Seroff will help participants design learning for students that encourages intentionality - slower, more deliberative and logical thinking – while engaging in online research. While walking through typical research scenarios, the presenters will identify key decision-making moments and opportunities for teaching, or “points of friction,” and recommend strategies to develop thinking routines.
Additional registration is required for preconference workshops and with limited space those interested are encouraged to register early. More information on these workshops and how to register can be found on the national conference website at national.aasl.org/preconferences.
