Indexing, from thesauri to the Semantic Web
CHICAGO — Describing both traditional and novel techniques, “Indexing: From Thesauri to the Semantic Web,” published by Chandos Publishing and available through Neal-Schuman Publishers, gives information professionals and students of library and information sciences a broad and approachable introduction to the art of indexing, an interesting but often highly complex field. Author Pierre de Keyser makes difficult techniques understandable, explaining how traditional techniques, such as thesauri, are often at the core of new techniques, like automatic indexing, ontologies or topic maps. Covering all types of indexing, as well as related literature, websites and freeware, topics include:
- An introduction to subject headings and thesauri;
- Automatic indexing versus manual indexing;
- Techniques applied in automatic indexing of text material;
- Automatic indexing of images;
- Indexing moving images;
- Automatic indexing of music;
- Taxonomies and ontologies;
- Metadata formats, tagging, and topic maps;
- Indexing the Web and the Semantic Web.
Keyser is head librarian of the Katholieke Hogeschool Leuven, an institute for higher education in Louvain, Belgium. He teaches classes on indexing, classification, cataloging and library automation and has published many articles on literary history, philosophy and librarianship.
