The Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) Program seeks agreements with LTA programs
CHICAGO —The American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) has announced that the Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) Program is offering to work with college programs (commonly known as LTA programs) for Library Support Staff. The purpose of this project is to develop agreements that would allow college graduates to receive the LSSC without having to further demonstrate their skills and knowledge. The ALA-APA will review these programs’ courses to find if graduates must complete courses that cover the majority of LSSC’s competency requirements. If so, the LSSC will propose an agreement with the college.
ALA-APA believes that college degrees or certificates coupled with the LSSC will benefit graduates, the library in which they work and library users. Lorelle Swader, director of ALA-APA, said, “LTA graduates will be recognized for their acquired skills and knowledge with this national certification, which is becoming a standard for our profession. The LSSC will show employers of these graduates that they are serious about their work and their future.”
ALA-APA has “Degree or Certificate Recognition” agreements with the following colleges:
- College of DuPage, Ill.
- Ivy Tech College, Ind.
- Palomar College, Calif.
- Waubonsee Community College, Ill.
- Illinois Central College
- Pasadena City College, Calif.
- Highline Community College, Wash.
- Central Carolina Community College, N.C.
- Dona Ana Community College, N.M.
- Three Rivers Community College, Conn.
- Belmont College, Ohio
ALA-APA is also in the processes of reviewing the courses and graduate requirements of eleven additional colleges.
Funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the American Library Association developed and established the LSSC Program, and supports ALA-APA’s work with LTA programs.
