Kumasi selected to present paper for YALSA’s Trends Impacting YA Services session at 2018 ALA Midwinter

CHICAGO — The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has chosen Dr. Kafi Kumasi, Associate Professor from Wayne State to present a paper at YALSA’s Trends Impacting YA Services session at the 2018 ALA Midwinter Meeting. Dr. Kumasi’s paper is entitled, “Doin’ the Knowledge: Using Hip Hop as Framework to Study Youth New Media Practices.” The Midwinter event will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018.

Friends of YALSA funds one individual each year to attend the ALA Midwinter Meeting to present a paper that addresses a topic from YALSA’s Research Agenda. Kumasi will receive up to $1,500 to help defray travel, registration and hotel costs. In addition to presenting the paper at the Trends Impacting YA Services event, her paper will also be published in a future issue of YALSA’s peer-reviewed, open source journal, The Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults.

“We were excited to see Dr. Kumasi’s research because it continues to push boundaries and acknowledge the social and cultural contributions that teens bring to their own literacies – especially during out of school time,” said Cindy Welch, chair of the Midwinter Paper Presentation Planning Committee. “It is an excellent example of the paradigm shift that YALSA encourages in work with teens.”
