CHICAGO— Ann Manning Fiegen, business librarian at California State University San Marcos, has been selected as one of two recipients of the 2009 Emerald Research Award.
The award, administered by the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) and sponsored by Emerald Publishing Group, provides $5,000 to the winner in support of proposed research in the field of business reference. Fiegen’s winning proposal aims to produce a systematic literature review of research methods and best practices employed by business librarians in the practice of business instruction in academic libraries.
“This proposal was selected for its significant potential contribution to the field of business reference,” said Stacey Marien, chair of the BRASS Emerald Research Awards Committee. “Through her assessment of the body of business instruction literature in academic libraries against an evolving model for evidence-based research, and by identifying the preferred instructional practices and generally accepted conceptual models that lead to increased information competencies of business students, Fiegen’s research will provide us with a clear view of effective techniques to achieve maximum success in business reference instruction.”
Prior to Fiegen’s tenure at California State University San Marcos, where she has been a business librarian since 1999, she was employed by the University of Arizona Libraries. There she worked as a catalog management librarian, plant sciences librarian and business librarian. Her previous publications include co-authorship of several articles published in Using Technology to Teach Information Literacy; Journal of Business and Finance Librarianship; A ssessing Student Learning Outcomes for Information Literacy Instruction in Academic Institutions; Reference Service Reviews; and College and Undergraduate Libraries. She has also presented her research at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference and several other regional conferences.
Eileen Breen, publisher at Emerald, commented, “We are very proud to sponsor this award which never fails to generate interesting studies with a practical impact on the community. This sits perfectly with our “Research you can use” philosophy to publish content that is both rigorous and relevant.”
Fiegen will accept her award, a cash prize to support her research sponsored by Emerald Group Publishing Limited, at the RUSA Awards Ceremony and Reception, scheduled for 3:30-5:30 p.m., Monday, July 13, in the Grand Ballroom E/F at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, 151 E. Wacker Dr., as a part of ALA’s 2009 Annual Conference events. More information about this and the many other RUSA events at Annual is available in a downloadable, printable PDF guide.
